Why?

it has nothing to do with having a conscience. If enough people think your way then eventually no music, television or movies will be made and society will crumble....eventually leading to massive wars and the complete destruction of mankind. Eventually the apes will take over and what humans are left will become their slaves. I don't want to be a monkey's slave so fucking pay for that shit.

I agree...if you want your music, television, movies, etc. then pay for them. If you can't afford them then you really need to get a job or a better job...the stuff doesn't cost that much.

I would have to disagree

You already are a monkey's slave though.

i don't know how some of you can wait days to download huge files that take forever, when you can have them right away (that always work, come with a nice physical package and so on) for a few measly bucks. I guess you guys have all of the time in the world to do this. By the time it takes you to find what you want, i am already listening/watching/playing it. I can't imagine being able to waste so much time, if i got everything i wanted this way, it would take forever and well vagina is more important

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-25-2009 14:45:

Huh?

I suspect you are not very familiar with how it works. Anyone can download a single album in CD quality faster than you can drive to the store and back.

Posted by lenazi on Aug-25-2009 14:46:

i guess i'm not familiar. what about movies that are a few gigs? games?

ps bowie took you 3 days

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-25-2009 14:54:

Well the Bowie torrent came from a public site, so the seeders are going to be slim due to the fact that a lot of people are piss-afraid to upload shit all day long (with good reason provided by the powers that be). Had it come from a site with membership and private trackers, I could have downloaded Bowie's life's work in only a few hours.

Blue-ray quality movies (8-10gig) can finish anywhere between 4 hours and a day, perhaps even faster. The thing about torrents is that uploader/seeder participation only helps speeds. Naturally, when everyone is afraid to share all of the time because the US President has supported a decision to charge over $100,000 for each song people are caught for, speeds are going to be drastically affected. Point being that if everyone who downloaded seeded their files and were sharing with one another all of the time without fear of devastating legal and financial reprieve, torrents would be (quite literally) hundreds of times faster than they already are. Your only limitation would be your internet connection.

This technology has been out and avilable for literally years. The fact that companies are not even trying to develop a way to profit off of this is the real crime here.

Do you have any idea how long it takes for amazon to get off their asses and send me the whole teenage mutant ninja turtles dvd collection (they dont have it in any store here so the internet is the only choice). By the time i get the dvds im sure to be dne with season 3 at least, and the rest are already downloaded just waiting for me to watch them.

Posted by lenazi on Aug-25-2009 15:03:

i can understand the slovenian ninja turtle thing, but really everything that i want is available in stores for me. What is not tends to be vinyl only releases and i would not bother with a shit quality rip so i import them. The waiting (3 days) makes it kind of special when i get the package and hold those records for the first time, taking it all in.

i know i'm a music geek, but i guess i'm just not geek enough for all this shit.

I want a movie: i buy or rent it. They always work. (i've heard so many stories of people looking for and downloading movies the way you guys do it that never work, are fucked up, shit quality and so on...)

i want music: i buy it, either physical or digital. Physical can't be erased if my hd or external hd fucks up. If it does, the companies that sell me digital will let me reacquire my collection for free. I think it is worth the money.

i want games: i don't buy games, because well i'm too old for pew pew up down left right up down left righ a b a b start select. I also don't have to worry about trojans and such this way.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-25-2009 15:17:

I'm with you, really. I prefer CDs and buy them (sparingly) when it's artist releases that I can actually find in-store. I don't even really download a movie unless it's one that simply doesn't even exist on DVD. I'm downloading a Coil discog lately that is taking forever, but the contents of it are simply things that do not exist anymore - half the group is dead and if this music isn't preserved somehow, it will literally disappear almost entirely.

If you know how to search, and what site to use, viruses/trojans/whatnot are simply not a worry in the least because the people who painstakingly rip from vinyl/cd into lossless quality downloads are fans - they labour out of love, and meticulously label each release because they believe in what they are doing and want to share it with others. People who still use Kazaa deserve to be caught for being 5 steps behind everyone, just as people who are still using torrents in 5 years will probably be behind the flock.

I am a member here, but for audio, it blows ass. Quality is hit or miss.

This is what it boils down to. If you know where to look, the quality is superb and you get it in very short time. 7gb in 1 hour? I am sure you could shower and cook dinner in the time it takes to download and burn that.

Probably not very long, but the more the go after centralized sites the more decentralized tracking will become. I could see more of the type of magnetic linking that azureus engineered being employed. It's help me get to torrents that were pulled off of trackers before.

This has nothing to do with Magnet URIs and everything to do with DHT and PeerExchange.
