The mentality of the local gov't and authorities is totally different between Europe and Canada, as others have already commented on.

If you look at some of the big festivals and clubs over here, you have:

Nature 1 - on an onld US Air Force rocket base in western Germany
Awakenings - two crazy venues: Gashouder which is an old oil storage tank and Maassilo which is an old grain elevator in the old port area of Rotterdam
Tresor - now in an old power plant in Berlin
Berghain - also an old power plant

If you were to use simliar venues in the GTA, you'd be looking at Redpath Sugar (similar to Awakenings Maassilo), the old the old Lakeshore coal power plant that was just torn down or the other one in the east end near Cherry Beach I think.

The local authorities would never go for it.

The other plus about the big European parties is the organization. You have lockers on site, good food at the outdoor festivals, good access to public transportation, good crowd control (though sometimes the crowds themselves challenge this a bit - Timewarp 2008 with Musicsnob and Highroller comes to mind).

This post isn't suppose to be a "�urope is better because..."post at all. I've been to lots of excellent parties and festivals back home (the first Sundance at Beach Club was probably the one-off festival that comes to mind right now).

Festivals aren't dead. What about that crazy Electric Zoo event? I personally went to the Electric Daisy Carnival in downtown LA which was at the LA memorial coliseum and that wasn't dead at all. PVD, Guetta, Benny Benassi, Zabiela, Markus Schultz etc. This was in June. If it's dead anywhere it's probably in Canada and more specifically in T.O.

heheh, hunny, you have to read the whole thread to make comments we have been discussing EZ and other American festivals already

I don't think these go on 'whole night' either. I played at a beach festival in Poland at the beginning of the month, there were maybe 8000 people there, it got shut down by police at pretty much exactly 4am since permits don't allow them to go passed that... and security over there is no joke, they all look like commandos!

First of all youd never be able to even THINK about doing it on a beach here. And if you are lucky enough to find a venue they shut it down at 11PM.

A lot of the festivals start in the morning too and go all day. So by the time 11pm rolls around, everyone is already exhausted. Then the after parties start!

Nature1 and Monegros go 'round the clock outdoors, but they're both in the middle of bloody nowhere.

Half the fun of Nature1 is the campsite parties with people who bring their own turntables and sound

yeh reminiscint of WEMF!
apart from a few headliners, i always liked it for the variety of people you would meet and going from campsite to campsite.
