It certainly made my problems with established religions greater. As you imply, the idea the entire universe was designed for us seems ludicrous when placed against the sheer dimensions of the thing.

However, it definitely instilled a realisation that humanity is such a small speck of dust floating in the giddying depths of nothing that to pretend to understand existence is just arrogance. There could be realms of existence we'll never know, simply on a scale beyond our reach or comprehension.

Indeed, but to what extent would it be fair to say these realms of existence may be inhabited by anything that happens to be godlike? If not, I don't see why it would make sense to ditch atheism.

(Sorry if I sound preachy, but I didn't quite understand the leap you took)

I don't know. That's the point. Previously, I was happy with the conclusion that no creator could exist in the physical universe, and there was no evidence nor compelling reason to believe in any metaphysical dimension. Now I'm perfectly prepared to believe there are entirely physical dimensions beyond our comprehension, and what they house is a mystery that'll probably never be solved.

It doesn't make any real impact on my attitudes towards life or religion: I still don't believe in any religion, I still think all existing religions are nonsense and I still live my life under my own moral outlook as if there is no afterlife or higher power. Despite what Halcyon may imply, I don't pull any punches in my approach to religious debate.

The only real change is I now regard hard atheism as the same kind of human arrogance as religion: both think they have the answer.

The scientific position is that the default answer is that nothing exists, until there is positive proof that it does. This doesn't mean that it actually doesn't exist or that no one will ever prove that it does, just that it is most logical to behave in a way consistent with a world in which it does not exist.

Funny, just today I was thinking about how we're all specks moving around on an orbiting speck fueled by a star which is a relative speck. (noemo)

This sort of stuff blows my mind/freaks me out. Quality.

That shit is depressing to me.
I really have a legitimate dream to go into space, either as a tourist or a billionaire-adventurist. I don't ever want to come back. Even if the oxygen tank runs out as I pass Jupiter, just let me go.
It's depressing to me how insignificant we are, but seemingly our presence and events seem so grand. She's having a baby, he's the new president, genocide and famine there. And after the years of realizing our position in the universe, after the years of realizing we are free to break out of our atmosphere, we have half a robotic Tonka truck on Mars.

"And to see you're really only very small
and life flows on within you and without you."

quote:
Seeing that we are very small shows the vastness of the universe because it enforces the idea that we are not significant, most of our lives do not change the world. This also leads us to the idea that life will go on without us because we will come back via reincarnation.

That was very good!

But he is right , our brain just cant comprehend how big our universe is.

Just like watching baywatch when i was younger , my brain couldnt comprehend how big pamela andersons tits were.

same thing really.

But science never actually proves anything at all, and nor does it claim to. I think the obvious problems physics has with satisfactorily explaining the universe emphasises that our understanding of the universe is not proven. They are only theories, theories that have yet to be reconciled.

Science clearly thinks that the universe has other levels we cannot observe, because it's drawing up hypothetical ones such as string theory and multiple dimensions.

Well it's still possible they don't but highly unlikely.

Indeed, and that's because it is located in the constellation known as the "greater dog" who, along with smaller dog-named star constellations accompanies Orion.

Not always. For example, if a scientist needs to deal with a situation she cannot explain, she first postulates the existence of something she has no proof for, acts as if it did indeed exist and, unless it turns out to be a pretty useless idea that is not getting her anywhere, she's going to hold that belief regardless of any proof she may have. That's how most scientific programmes work.

The question is not whether aliens exist: the question is - what is an alien? There could be zillions of life forms out there, but it doesn't entail from that that they drive space saucers and have glowing fingers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the first "alien" ever found turned out to be bacteria.
