I actually emailed my Artificial Intelligence professor about this very video. He did his dissertation on swarms and nanotechnology related items. It's interesting, he gave me three words: cohesion, separation, alignment.

That just sounds hilarious. lol... anyone interested in swarms.
highways like veins
The birds are doing complex quantum mechanical wave functions by utilizing a complex array of groupings. These wave functions, shown in real time, have yet to be understood by humans at this current time. Ultimately the birds, and there are a lot of them, know how to do complex quantum mechanical wave functions on the fly.

Impending armageddon?
its very intresting but definatley not unfathomable. Its convergent evolution in the works. We have swarms of insects (wasps bees) which do the same thing. And fish as jenny mentioned. These birds have very quick reflexes, large optic lobes and cerebellum to dictate naviational movement in coordinance with visual preception. form means function in the animal world so to have hypertrophied body parts (brain parts in this case) would dictate more advance functionality.
You should see how a blind bat tracks its fast moving prey using highly developed sonar type systems. This is also quite intresting and a tribute to our own Class.
