I usually finds that this happens to me when I'm not fully in the mood to mix or I'm tired of using the same set of tracks. Just switch it up and make it interesting and challenging for yourself and I think you'll find that your mixing will actually improve.
These days, I tend not to spin that much at home unless I am making a promo mix and that is not that often these days.
In other words I will only spin if I feel like it, and usually if I feel like it there are no problems.
The difference is when you are in a club scenario and don't feel up to it.
Something that usually works for me is to find a flirty girl and play to her. You would be surprised what hormones do for your concentration he he... just don't tell my Mrs Nem.
To be honest though, if I play for a crowd my passion for showing off takes over a bit so motivation usualy isn't a problem. However not performing isn't an option if you are infront of a crowd as you have to deliver no matter what. Having plenty of routine and records you know well helps a whole lot and getting to a point where I make mistakes would mean that I am either blind drunk or asleep and I don't spin under either circumstance.
What affects me is my motivation to do the job, but this doesn't have an impact on the mixing itself, been doing it for too long.
When I play at home I visualise crowds and anticipate how they will respond to what I am doing.
Also when playing at home there is nothing wrong in playing a mix with wall to wall anthems that get you going.
But if you really are not feeling it then you are forcing the issue and I recomend that you don't do it as it will become a chore rather than something you enjoy.
Don't use alcohol or drugs at home to find the motivation for it as it's a bit of a slippery slope, soon you will find yourself placing those activities together and wont be able to do one without the other which will actually hurt your abilities later down the line. Not meaning to be all preachy as I have nothing against those activites per se.
Bottom line is that if you are having trouble motivating yourself at home then don't force it, you have the freedom to relax and do what you want to. And don't suddenly feel guilty because you haven't put in your time. Enjoy what you do and it will come across in your delivery.
Cheers
Nem

ive got a mates housewarming coming up where ill be spinning some tunes. This is currently feeding my motivation to dl heaps of new material & memorise the feels of each track.
The only downside is that there will be heaps of young ppl there, & from mobile dj'ing experience, people under the age of 21 get confussed when a dj plays progressive edm.
But still, the motivation is to play my best until i get booed off with britney requests, at which point i shall use sly tactics to try & impregnate an 18 year old...
do NOT impregnate the 18 year old....
Yeh a bowl for me usually fixes this real quick. And the funny thing is back years ago when people use to say "just smoke some pot" I'd think "what a lame excuse for a drug addict to get high" lol.
I just figured it was some pothead who was more concerned with fixing his mood then his music.. till the first time I smoked and sat down in the studio.
HOLY FVCK.
Its hard to explain what exactly is does.
But first obviously it makes the process a lot more entertaining and enjoyable, that still won't compensate much for a lack of skills and/or creativity.
But what I noticed about pot is how FAST and natural I work when I'm high. I literally just go for what sounds good and nothing else. No "ideas" or "new concepts" I wanna try, no fancy overthought arrangements. Pot actually helps me keep things simple. And when I smoke I tend to loop something like a 4 bar beat and just slowly refine and build it so it is consistently sounding better.
So pot really actually helps me zone in and focus. And it also helps me get rid of sounds quicker that just don't belong. When I'm sober I'll tend to think "oh I can make it fit if I try hard enough". With weed I just scrap it completely and try the next random thing that comes to my head. Its like idea > go, almost like a machine gun. I make decent sounds either way but I def notice some of my more impressive or moving sounds come when I'm stoned.
It really helps imo, for producing that is.
Might help for producing, but I can honestly say that if I touch a spliff I can forget about mixing properly!

Fuck I wish I still did drugs. Sometimes you just don't understand a track until you hear it under the influence.
