Eh, they were a mixed blessing I guess. You get the whole world scrutinizing you for months, you get a massive increase in traffic all day long in a city that notoriously already has horrible traffic (a lot of friends just up and left the city for a month to get away from it). And you get things like bomb threats and overly heightened security in case a guy like Richard Jewel does or does not set off a bomb in Centennial Olympic Park.

Positively it brought a lot of attention to the city, I got to attend some events, tourism increased, I met some cool people at the golf course I was working at at the time, etc.

Overall though, I think it was mostly about the hype.

I'm glad Rio got it.

Took me a while to guess what city you were talking about

Atlanta Olympics put Atlanta on the world map. Since then, the population of Atlanta has exploded. Fair trade for 2 weeks of inconvenience don't you think?

So says you. Atlanta had the busiest airport in the world long before the Olympics came around. Metro Atlanta's population has been growing at a rapid clip for decades. Freaknik put Atlanta on the map before the Olympics did. The only lasting remains we got from the Olympics is a baseball stadium (which is very nice) and a park with a bunch of personalized bricks. I don't think the Olympics did that much for us.
