i had a conversation about this with a friend a few weeks back.

is it my race (white) that pre-determines my attraction to a black woman, or is it that a bigger percentage of black women are unattractive (as opposed to white/asian/etc.)

basically, are black women generally less attractive than white ones, or am i pre-determined to think so because i'm white.

does that make sense?

i don't think there's a proper answer, and it's probably a mixture of both. but living in baltimore (huge black population) i see my fair share of chocolate, and percentage wise i'd say there's just more attractive white women.

i dunno... something to think about.

i am personally rarely attracted to black black girls. any one that i was attracted to in high school was half-asian or half-white. typically i'm only attracted to white or asian girls (and not dark-skinned asians like cambodian/lao etc). i think the media has a lot to do with that- black black women are typically associated with big asses, fat tits, humongous.. well, everything. kind of an unfair depiction.

in the end, i'm attracted to pretty girls, and averse to ugly ones, regardless of race.

Firstly, I'm not talking exclusively about the media, but about the cultural discourse as a whole. In that sense, I truly think that social meaning plays an active role in attraction. For example, as you can see on the right, there were products to help you gain weight in the end of the 19^th century, and that was sure commercialised in order to satisfy a social demand. It's no secret that society plays a role in what is to be considered attractive and what isn't: if you take a look at some paintings from the Renaissance, you can see that women were almost always portrayed with charming love handles. When was the last time you opened a magazine and saw a chubby model?

As you can see, you can not help but recognise that there is a certain influence regarding what is to be considered attractive to any society, and these values are quite often arbitrary. For example, why the hell do the Japanese even care about double eyelids? She looked better before applying that damn thing! If that's not social, and with the sole intent of mimicking the shape of the eyes of pretty much everyone else in the world, then the next paragraph shouldn't make sense.

The fact is that we're rarely exposed to beauty that doesn't conform to what I'd call "European". That's not just because Whites (Hispanic or otherwise) are a majority in developed countries, but because we still haven't welcomed other peoples aesthetically, so to speak. Why do Americans have expressions like "jungle fever" and "yellow fever", for example, and nothing like "white cracka fever"? I almost feel that being attracted to white people is considered to be the norm (reason why white males fared so well) even if you're not white. That's what our culture oozes, and the consequences are sometimes quite funny. Anyway, take a look at Slylee's "Hot" thread to see what I mean.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be so absolute as to deny the possibility of an underlying biological bias towards fair-skinned women. "Fair Women, Dark Men", written by an anthropologist at Université Laval in Quebec named Peter Frost seems to have an argument in favour of a less cultural interpretation. In the foreword, U. of Washington sociologist Pierre L. van den Berghe states:

Although virtually all cultures express a marked preference for fair female skin, even those with little or no exposure to European imperialism, and even those whose members are heavily pigmented, many are indifferent to male pigmentation or even prefer men to be darker.

Honestly, I know very little about this book, but I'm humble enough to know this may play an influence. And this maybe why black woman, rather than black man, are prejudiced against. However, should culture not play a role, white men wouldn't be so popular either. So there,

i mean... when i find a diamond amongst turds, i'm generally pretty excited too... more so than when finding a diamond amongst diamonds.

there's plenty of all black neighborhoods in south florida that aren't "ghetto". they're just middle class working black families. same with cuban dominated neighborhoods in parts of southwest miami.

^there you go. i don't judge all white people by those who live in trailer parks. yes we all are black but i think i would be hard pressed to find an attracrive guy in the trailer park and i do find white guys attractive. either way ghetto does not equal black.

my best friend used to live in a predominantly black neighborhood but the houses and lawn were nicely maintained and there were kids in the street playing football and stuff on the weekends and people waving at you and stuff when you drove by. he always joked about it and called it "the hood" but i always told him i didn't get the "hood" vibe at all from his neighborhood. it was a nice neighborhood with mostly black families. no biggie.

we're house hunting now and we looked at a place in a neighborhood like that and we were strongly considering it but then we got this other deal where we get to find a foreclosure property now. but anyway my point is, we know the difference between a hood and neighborhood with working black people in it.
