I didn't see this thread until just now. Did you go?

I'm really surprised you have no real knowledge of Fleming; you seem very knowledgeable about the wider scene, and Fleming isn't exactly an obscure name that you would never have come across.

I've seen Fleming four or five times and he is always good. I met him at the start of this month actually; he is a very nice guy and has an amazing thirst to keep music decent and away from commercialisation.

There's a great quote from Fleming where he says something like 'my aim has always been to have fun while being serious,' and I think it really sums up his DJ performances well. He proves that you can play deep, dark and hard without compromise, yet still have a great time and an enthusiastic crowd.

I should still be going, although my brother is being a bit of an unreliable wanker currently so I may have to crash at a friend's instead.

I'm not a massive psytrance fan, and I rarely go and see big name DJs. I have some of J00F's compilations and remixes from ten years back when he was playing more uplifting and proggy trance, but I haven't kept up to date with him because I haven't kept up to date with psytrance.

The night is apparently being broadcast live on AH.fm too. 10:00PM - 6:00AM GMT (excluding Solarstone's set though).

Someone needs to record!

One of the only trance DJs I would consider seeing nowadays. Has brilliant crowd control and chemistry, full of energy and life, very humble. Great programmer and like Rebel9 mentioned, solid mixer. Don't think I've ever heard a bad transition from him. He has complete control over his crowd. Starts deep and proggy and perfectly progresses into full-on psy.

I went, but I didn't stick around long enough for J00F. Got there at 12.45 and the DJ, who I assume was John O'Bir, was already banging out 140bpm fluff trance full of yearning male vocals and bucolic chords. J00F wasn't due to play until 4am and I couldn't meet up with Jon because of some confusion. After 30-40 minutes I realised there was just no way I could stand three more hours of unicorn trance leading up to J00F. So I left.

I had plans to go back at 4 for J00F, but we got side-tracked and it never ended up happening. I know I barely gave it a chance: maybe I'm completely wrong and it turned around after I left and maybe I'm just being an over-critical, cynical prick, but I felt like I'd pissed away �13 for the door ticket.

If I go to a night, I want it to build up properly. I don't want six hours of peak-time, with Jon O'Bir dropping anthem after anthem before 1am. If a DJ is playing four hours before the headliner, he should be warming the night up, not blowing his euphoric load as many times as possible in the time-slot. I knew that there was no way I was getting any deeper proggy stuff from Solarstone, or any prog-psy from J00F.

Ha - I had the exact same situation at the start of this month. J00F was preceded by Blank & Jones and then Cosmic Gate. However, he basically played what he wanted, as if he had not had anyone play before him.

You missed out hard.

Is this how trance line-ups work, then? Everyone plays their own set regardless of the line-up and time slot? If I'd have known, I wouldn't have left the flat until 3am. As it stands, by 4am I was out of money and sobering up again so I just packed it in.

That's a shitty time slot, most people who party that late are really hardcore, I would stay for 2am, but if I was out all night, 4am is too late. I can understand your predicament, it would suck to have to listen to crappy trance for an hour before the guy you wanna see. I'm sure J00F rocked anyways, I bet you did miss out

When its a lineup full of "headliners" then yeah. Nobody books Jon O'bir to play a prog set.

Not at good events, but this is the problem with trance; it's no longer about building a solid progression of music. Each DJ comes on, completely ignores the person before them and drops their hits one after the other. There's no acknowledgement of roles (i.e. 'opening' DJ)

In the case of Godskitchen, where I saw Joof last, it was highly appropriate for him to have ignored the two acts before him. Both were playing maximal, cheesy faux tech-house trance shit, which has no correlation with his minimal, deep sound. Upon entering the booth he stopped the music altogether, dropped this to start:



and then built his set from there. The only people who really cared at that stage were the serious punters who had come to see him and pretty much hated the acts prior. I would have just come to see him at 5am when he started, but I had to get there at 1am for a few reasons.

I missed out on J00F too. If it was my home town I would have stayed for the whole lot, but I had to be out of the hotel in the morning and then drive the 1 and a half hours home. And there was no way I was doing that without any sleep, especially after copious amounts of beer.

To be honest I was really disappointed when I got there and saw the printed time-slots. 1) I was gonna miss J00F. 2) Jon O'Bir right before Solarstone? Not the best line-up decision in the world. Anyway, Solarstone was still the highlight of my night. He was definitely a breath of fresh air after Jon O'Bir. It's a shame you missed it System-J.

I left right after I heard the first tune of James Alexander. He played... wait for it... Lethal Industry! I have never heard that track being used to open a set before! He must have played it in some kind of protest after the spacey stuff Solarstone was playing, and was clearly an indication of what the rest of his set would be like. So I buggered off.

Great night,
Everybody apart from James Alexander (was hoping he would play stuff of 'Lost In You' calibre, rather than pre-set trance from 2+ years ago) was fantastic, and of course Fleming came on at the end and took the roof off.

He played a lot of the tunes that have been doing the rounds for a long time now - tracklist was something along the lines of:

Encore: The Digital Blonde - Legato (2006)

All those IDs at the start were banging dark psy trance. As you would probably guess, a few people lost interested around the 'Ghost in the Machine' mark, hence the uplifting trance. It did the job, and people were loving his new tune, and then when O'Fortuna came in it was going off again. I think Eyes Wide Open was my tune of the night - it's just sheer genius!

Good to have a brief chat with J00F before his set - he's always really enthusiastic about everything that's going on at the moment. He said that him and Rick had been producing like demons lately, and I would probably hear it in the set (but I didn't notice much that sounded 00.DB-ish)

My only criticism of J00F is that he does seem to turn the music up very loud (redlining), which is of course is ok on a great system, but in a little club like 'the plug' does make things distort a bit. I was having to almost humm the riffs to some of the tunes in my head because it wasn't very clear. This could be due to James Alexander doing the same before hand mind - I know that when you follow someone who has been playing too loud its difficult to turn it back down without destroying the energy.

As for the previous comments about Jon O'Bir, it's true that he was playing main room trance right from the off, but I wouldn't have said he was rubbish. Thing is, the club was packed by the time he came on and that's the kind of music that the people wanted. Trance doesn't have anywhere near as much depth as it used to - everything that's out is pretty much sickly sweet uplifting stuff. I'm not a huge fan of this any more, but I can still appreciate it when it's being done well, and Jon O'Bir is definitely one of the better ones. I thought Solarstone was decent too - same review.

Shame I never got to meet System-J - I suppose if it's really not your thing you would struggle to enjoy the relentlessness of it for 4 hours, but I think that J00F would have made it worthwhile.

Well, at the time I figured you hadn't text me back because you were on the dancefloor and into it. I really, really wasn't enjoying O'Bir and I felt that even if we did meet up, I would probably be a complete mood-killer for you because I wouldn't be enjoying myself and you would.

Chalk this one down to inexperience with trance events. I didn't see the time-slots: I only knew J00F was 4-6 from your text. I'm used to nights where the music is built up properly and the DJs follow each other's lead. If I'd known Solarstone was on a few minutes after I left I would have stuck around, and hopefully been pleasantly surprised.

By the way, The Plug isn't particularly small, and I didn't think it was packed when I was there. We were in the side-room. The main room, where I saw Sasha, is much bigger and more open.

Yea packed is an overstatement actually - it got busier during Solarstone - but the kind of people that were in probably wouldn't have been interested in anything else.

I know what you mean though - gone are the days that anyone books 2 warm up DJs - its only the first hour and a half that is anything other than peak time trance in the UK.
Apart from when Markus Schulz gets booked, but then some clown always bangs it out before him!

I've seen him 8 times, and he's easily the most consistent DJ I've seen over the past decade.
