So what? Yeah, the guy posts dumb threads sometimes, but this is not one of them. He's just linking to a new track, which is what this forum is for, no?

Lol! Well, Uhm I wish we could take credit for those lyrics (good or bad as they may be) but actually Love story is just a remix that we did for Nadia Ali, former singer for iio. That is her single, not ours. Be easy on her she's an incredible singer / songwriter. I agree they're not my favorite lyrics she's written but they grow on you because the melodies are so good. I encourage everyone to listen to her new album it's very very good, we love it! Also she co-wrote a song called "That Day" with us and her lyrics are incredible. I can post them if you like? We're working on finishing it now.

So thanks for that. SSL 9k DrOOL. Even the Neve Sidecar creates droool. But of course its all about using it right ; )

What tracks did you guys mix through the Neve recently?

We mixed the Lily Allen, Nadia Ali, TCM and Owl City remixes through the Neve. The mashups were done all in the box and Redhead and other originals (which no one has heard yet) were mixed via the SSL. Nothing that is posted was mastered yet except for the Lily Allen and Nadia Ali remixes.

Actually I posted it, but thanks for the statement. I agree, this should be about the music, and about what Dave Dresden and I are doing right now, not about some drama from a long time ago.

So I'm curious, had you guys heard Petter - "Some Polyphony" before?:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X8xtBCUuuI

Wondering because the main sound and pattern is really similar to "Red Head."

I can kinda see what you mean, It has a staccato synth line with a short release kinda like our song.
Funny ass video though!

I think you fail to see the crux of the issue: movingincircles

That's what I was talking about, the timbre and the rhythm of that one sound, the rest of the song is obviously different. Wasn't saying you were trying to rip him off, just wondered if you had heard it.

Since I wrote the main riff with Dave Penner of Andain on GUITAR, I don't think we ripped this guy off, don't even know who he is to be honest and never heard his stuff until today. BTW there's only 12 notes in the western scale, everyone's bound to make something that sounds a little like something else.

I think what MrJiveBojingles really wants to know is what Synth and Patch was used for that sound so he can make the same melody. He means no harm

I'm gonna guess...Moog Voyager. Airball?

Dave knows it well, I just asked him about it and he loves that track. I like it too, I just hadn't had the pleasure of hearing it. Thanks for bringing it up, and like I said, the video is freaken Hilarious! I wish I had of thought of it. Wasn't at all offended that you asked about it. Didn't mean for it to come off that way.

As for the patch we used for the main riff. It was a sound I programmed on a Prophet 8. I used midi cc numbers to automate the filter and release times. I based it on some chords Dave Penner (Andain) was fooling with in the studio one day when we were all hanging out.

Cheers,

-Mikael

Well, I don't know anything about singers with love handles or perms, that was before my time. I'm only concerned about the here and now. As for medical issues, most artists are crazy in one way or another to be honest so if DD has these issues (and not saying he does), then who cares. Maybe it helps the music...

Have a nice day

Cool. How do you like that synth? How does it compare to the old Prophets if you've used them?

Well that is a good question amigo, and in fact we do have a prophet 5 at the studio. It's Goapele's but we share synths a lot between us so we do get to use it. How do they compare... Well I don't think they're much alike at all. They're both analog true, but one uses VCOs and the Prophet 8 DCOs. Also the new chips that DS Instruments uses have everything on one chip from what I understand. Meaning the DCO, the filters, everything built onto one chip which is why they can get so much into such a small package for things like the Tetra and Mopho. ...but of course this has an effect on the sound I'm sure. Truthfully the Prophet 8 is a great synth in my opinion but you have to be willing to tweak some knobs because I don't think the factory presets are very inspiring, but how many synth presets are unless they're a classic right? The prophet 8 is great for leads, some strings, and noises. The prophet 5 is just a massive big beast! It just sounds huge. The 8 just doesn't have that bottom and general thickness. What it does have though is a unique character and an analog sound that trumps most soft synths imo. It's also very programmable (meaning so many ways to route things and manipulate the sound including a step sequencer), and it can be automated very easily to do all kinds of cool shit with midi. The prophet 5s version of automation, turn the knobs in real time while someone is playing it live lol...

Thanks for the review, I've thought about picking up an 08. I don't really care about presets, just wondering how you felt about the overall sound and capabilities of it. Wish I had a decent music store around here to test one out myself.

What other synths do you guys have in your studio?

We have the usual suspects. Prophet 8, Tetra, Moog Voyager, Prophet 5, Roland MKS 80, Super JX, JX 3p, ATC-X, SE-1. We also have a rhodes MkII, Piano, and other instruments. What we really want, and we're trying to track one down is a MacBeth M5! Holy sh*t that thing is cool (at least to my ear)!

Where are you located? some music stores have a good return policy, you could order one and if you don't like it send it back...

since we are talking lyrics here maybe you'd like to get at some of these bad boys

"i feel the trance, the trance deep within my pants
ohhh ooohhh the trance awww yeah the trance
I want to prance around and dance
oh ohhhh the trance
Ligers, tigers, fighters become lovers, bikers become huggers
oh ohhh the trance
pixie dust, dixie cups, dont mix me up with a michael or a dresden
you'll be dreadin it, when i mix your medicine with mascaline in your benelyn
coughin up, adrenaline, while i stab you in the esophagus
THE E IS RUNNIN OUT THE IS RUNNIN OUT
OMG EVERYONE the E is runnin OUT!
RUn to the nearest exit
before your new bf realizes your not a fag got
The e is runnin out!"

let me know what you think and if you need me to record it for your next song.....

Heh, "usual suspects," that's quite a setup compared to what I'm used to.

I'm on the east coast but the nearest decent-sized city is about forty-five minutes away. Need to get off my butt and look around for synths there one of these days.

Truthfully I get a lot of cool shit on ebay pretty cheap. Just got the Super JX for $300.
