Lol, why are people coming down on Cam for not liking Timo's set? Even if he was there for an hour, an hour is still a long lull period for a set imo.

Bahaha, you squirrelly bunch of bitches. Why do you take it so personally when someone doesn't enjoy the night as you did? Are you insecure or something? FAGS.

Posted by Cribby on Nov-29-2009 20:24:

Anyone other than Cam have something constructive to say about the set?

I'm curious.

Posted by Ni-Cd on Nov-29-2009 21:33:

Anyone got a Timo Set they could post to show some love? I've never heard the techno genius at work... and Cam...you suck! How dare you have an independent thought. Shame!

This set is ok...the only one I have. But what he played at the club though was genious.. I will try to write a review tomorrow when at work, I am kinda busy right now cleaning my place. I also had too much to drink, so it's hard to even make a review that's constructive, but musically I know I really really really loved it!

I've seen Timo twice before and honestly he was 50 / 50. First time out, he was pretty damned incredible. The second time (also his last time at guv) was a piece of shit party. Music sucked, crowd sucked, everything sucked and when do I EVER say that about a night.

I avoided this due to work but I'm glad to hear he was on top of his game. The man is a legend. Must check him out next time.

Ok, I hope you guys won't mind yet another constructive review of Timo Maas's set last Fri.
I personally thought, Timo has rocked it. In fact, I say so, because of how unusual his set was. Sure, probably people who've seen him before may be saying "well, its the good ol' Timo sound", but for me it seemed innovative, deep and even (and I'll dare to say) psychedelic! We may not agree on some of these points, but you certainly cannot agree more on the fact that it pure tribal madness. Playing at 122bpms the entire 3 hours, Timo managed to make people move and get into his hypnotic rhythms without any disruption. Not only that, but he also seemed to be in a great mood, since he interacted with the crowd quite well. Every time I looked over at the DJ booth, I saw a man who truly loves what he plays and is trying to deliver his passion to the masses. If you'll ask me, I'd classify his set as Forest Techno. My only complaint about it (and truly, its not a complaint at all), is that this kind of sound should be played outdoors, under a daytime sun. Preferably on a beach or in a forest. Somewhere tropical, outside of a club environment.
Big props to Platform for bringing Timo to Toronto.

Cool.

Don't want to sound stupid or even worse sound like a newb but this "Forest Techno" you speak of sounds cool. Can you suggest some sets or DJ's that play this genre?
I

agreed, his first two hours in particular were very creative + fresh... the music was mental and the party itself was even more haywire

The DJ i would picture playing the closest genre would be Pena of Flow Records. He played a very similar sound at this year's Eclipse festival. Other DJs playing resembling music would be James Monro, and occasionally (in the right environment) D-Nox. If I think of more names, I would add them to the list.

It didn't seem slow at all. Sometimes bpms do not determine the intensity of the music.

Posted by jon jon on Dec-01-2009 06:36:

you're right about the intensity thing, but still 122 is insanely fucking slow... if I had to "eyeball it" he was at least at 126...

(tho I think you were just trying to make a point about it not being mega slamming beats)

Nope - Timo started at 122 and moved up gradually -- which I thought was GREAT! He did get up to 125 again by the end of his first hour.

He asked me before the night to bring it down throughout my set to 124, and for the last 15 minutes to drop it to 122-123.

I loved Timo's set. Great guy too. I don't really like having to bring down the tempo at peak time in the night, but these days I much prefer slower tempos (124-126). The music breathes more funk, is sexier and thicker.

+1

I've heard tons of 90 bpm tunes that blow away 130 tracks in terms of intensity.

I hadn't been to FW in quite some time, and it was nice to head back and somehow each night there is a little bit better than the last.

Walked in to a busy spot and I believe it was Simon Jain on and he had the room bumpin' along nicely, and smoothly into JK who played some great tech.

Would lie if I said I wasn't getting excited to see Timo as I enjoyed his sound from 99-2003ish and Ubik (The Dance) still remains one of my fav tracks of all time.

I enjoyed the rollercoaster ride he took the crowd on and it seemed like he was havin' a great time up there himself.
