tiesto's traffic has a diminished chord in it which plays a prominent role. Often as in all music, you won't get the complete chord so often you might be playing or hearing a diminished chord despite it sounding unlike what you think a diminished chord sounds like.

I think the best way to develop harmonic language is to listen to challenging music which you dig the harmony and try and decode it. Just like vocabulary, you will develop a working use of chords which is unique to you.

it is unfortunate that harmony seems to be a lost art and people seem to rely on the same cliche chords over and over and over whether they truly intended to use them or it is just a reflection of their small range.

It really doesn't take that much time. 2 years and you will know enough to analyze any pop song in a heartbeat. I always found it extremely fascinating so i suppose the work for me wasn't such a chore. The down side is that you will loose a certain mystic regarding music in that the mystery is sort of gone. You also become a little jaded in that it is often hard to just use a simple progression because you know too much and are tempted to do something a little more exciting or challenging.

I have been yearning to do dance again but I honestly think theory might of ruined it for me. I've spent the last 7 years doing classical music where harmony is pushed to its limits and it is hard to just step back and do something simple. Not that you can't but you just don't feel satisfied. You have this feeling that everything has been done and it sort of makes harmony more of a technical thing regarding what key you are and where you want to go with what emotion. I do miss the days where I would find progressions by accident.

My girlfriend who sings opera wants to start a dance/pop project so I will have another go at it but it is extremely hard to find anything satisfying because everything you do seems cliche. That progression I posted sounded cool to others but to anyone who has studied harmony , it is so boring and overdone.

What I do still find fascinating about dance is sound design. I don't mind songs with boring harmony because there isn't much anyone can do that would make me scratch my head but interesting sounds and production still tickle my fancy.
