The new contrast ratios for LED backlit LCD TVs are now on par with the Plasma screens.

maybe in controlled tests, but not in real world usage....not even close..

Um. The point of a "controlled test" is to eliminate the placebo effect and other forms of bias. Unless you mean something entirely different from the normal meaning of "controlled" (contrived? slanted?), you are basically saying that people who own plasmas are full of shit and won't admit that an LED-backlit LCD is just as good on contrast, even when all objective evidence proves that it is.

Posted by bcope on Dec-14-2009 04:47:

no i mean that when you use a test pattern to determine "full off" to "full on" contrast you might get a big honkin number out of an LCD which comes close to a quality plasma, but how often do you see that when you are watching a movie or a tv show?

local dimming, which many LCDs use to achieve their purported contrast ratios, is basically useless in real world conditions...as soon as *anything* bright appears onscreen the area around that object is then illuminated...

its a moot point anyway, as the fact remains that the best black level and most contrast ever produced by a display is a plasma, not any LCD, LED or otherwise..

I don't have much experience with 720p LCDTV's but the ones that I've seen at friends houses all support 1366x768 when their PC's are connected. Half the time they won't display 1280x720 when you select that resolution in the display properties.

The TV market is fucked.

If you're going to buy an LED-lit LCD TV, check if it's side lit, or back lit. Obviously back lit is better.

My recommendation is not to buy one at all, they're horrifically overpriced at the moment.

A "720p" LCD will usually have a resolution of 1366x768 because that's the most efficient size that manufacturers can cut their panels at. Technically it's higher than 720p, you could call it 768p I guess, if you were a retard.

Though my last TV was a Sony Grand WEGA RPLCD and it was actually 1280x720 native, it's the only TV I've ever seen like that.

I just bought this...

SONY KDL52S510 online at Futureshop.ca for their boxing day sale..

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...7835&CatId=3651

For $1199....

Good? Bad?

Wondering if I should have went with the Samsung perhaps? I went all over the web and seen great reviews on this one...

It's 60hz opposed to 120hz... not a huge sports watcher and rarely going to be using it for video games. It's the family TV and primarily for movies and TV.

Hell, now I need to go find me some hacked HD US Satalite...

I was at a friend's last night and she has a Samsung and a Sony. She said the Sony is louder, but the Samsung has a better picture.

Not anymore

Sony now produces panels with Sharp.

EDIT: I am not personally a fan of the 120/240hz TV's, they look weird. I am with bcope on the motion of plasma's. I was watching a Samsung plasma on the weekend, and it was smooth, crisp, and the colours were incredible.
