personally, i would be proud if a current genre carried traits of a existing genre. no reason to be elitist here, look on the bright side.
FUCK YEAH

Originally posted by jennypie It truly is such an ignorant and elementary argument to get into though. I mean, really? "Proper" techno? There is no "proper" anything. Unless of course, the formula is all written down in The Big Rule Book of Music somewhere, then I stand corrected. Good music crosses boundaries and blurs genres anyways, so who really gives a shit? What difference does it make to you or anyone else? Fuck this genre, fuck that genre. Sounds like noob talk to me.

Originally posted by VDub This is the issue that I have... You have one genre being labeled as techno right? Then someone comes along, and develops an entirely different sound, and calls IT techno... Well, to the people who were into the first one, and dislike the second one, it's almost offensive. I'm not sure how to word exactly what I mean but I'm sure you get my point...
Funny...a lot of modern Jazz musicians will still play standards from 50-60 years ago, recognising the brilliance of their predecessor's work, yet a large portion of today's "Techno" DJs won't go anywhere near cuts that were produced over the past 10-20 years, considering them to be old and outdated.
Anyway...

Originally posted by Skipper Sure it would be great to have these guys out, but be realistic, few of them would pull in a big crowd. And there are few things more sad than a DJ playing bangin techno to a room of 30 chin scratchers against the back wall, sipping their one beer of the night.

Bring on the fucking hard beats!!! Speedy J was the last set I saw that was laid down proper...
Clarke anywhere in T.O. and Steve Rachmad at Footwork are my "dream" sets.

Dave Clark kicking out the oldschool jams, live. Six parter, total insanity.
Trust, if I ever come into a whack of cash or the backing needed to bring some of these guys (and gals - Michelle Herrmann would be a top pick) in, mnml's monopoly on Toronto will be over.

Originally posted by Kate Manus I saw him shortly after this gig and when he realized I was from Canada he referred specifically to that night at FW and what a great time he had, it was one of his favourite gigs of the year believe it or not. Shame indeed that he likely won't be back in Canada any time soon... it has been much longer since he last played Montreal too, maybe Sona days? another techno artist that would be nice to see back in Canada after all this time is the Advent.

Originally posted by PivotTechno I think it was Mario J who brough Murat in to play at Footwork about three years ago. Place was fairly rammed and his set was off the chain. Someone also booked in Rob Hood at FW the same year. Not quite as busy, but such a memorable night. Hood destroyed the place and I haven't danced that hard in ages. But as you state, sadly, those are exceptions to the rule. Amazing how these guys can play for thousands overseas, but (with the exception of one-offs like Movement/DEMF) get next to no love on their home continent. Some things never change.
