Buffalo's a solid brand. I often buy their stuff out here, and know other people who use them a lot. They're not that populat outside Japan, but solid nonetheless.

You could just as well make a torrent of many of your documents and host them on a site like Demonoid - should the catastrophic ever happen, you'll know precisely where you can find everything again. Assuming Demonoid doesn't die in the meanwhile.

Hmmm... that's not a bad idea, but I'll probably be squandering my poor money in two of the world's most expensive cities in the next few days, so buying a new HD is not really among my top priorities: it's more probable to see me streaking around Harajuku and the Trafalgar Square than buying any redundant piece of computer hardware

Given how I can't read all those books in my lifetime, I do keep just the most useful ones in on-line vaults, fearing a worst case scenario. If my apartment blows up while I'm at work or, less dramatically, my HD dies, I do have some back up copies. Dude, just transfer everything from the old onto the new, and then do a complete re-format of the old and it should be fine. Unless it's an actual manufacturing error.

I did. However, the problem seems to persist in some specific sectors even after I reformat it (that is, when I "quick reformat" it - depending on the partition, I can't format it properly).

I sure hope they are. I'm running a computer with a damaged HD. And I have some partitions along with different operating systems just in case one of them stops functioning.

So far, nothing has happened. Fedora is the only one that identifies the HD error though although I'm pretty sure it isn't in that particular partition.

What about guarantee?

I've got a simular problem, my HD just gave up (samsung) after a year. It does nothing anymore (power doesn't work) is there any way to get to the files on them? or did I download 200GB of Pron for nothing?
bought a new one yesterday (western digital) 1TB

Can't you rip the hd off and put it in a desktop computer?

I just thought of actually just sending it to samsung for my data (read pron)
Normally it's still in the guarantee period but i broke some seals when i opened the thing, to realise I actually know nothing about high-tech equipment
