Whenever I grow a beard I always shave the underside. There's and area where your chin meets your neck or so, and that's where I draw the line. I trim that area almost everyday as it gets unruly pretty quick and has potential to look the most homeless. Keep a nice sharp line there helps manage it the best.
And if your gf is all upset about teh beard, just have her grow one too. When you do things like that together, she'll see the fun in it and it will bring your relationship closer.

I grow a beard from time to time. I always forget how much growing it itches like a mofo. I usually just push my finger under my chin/jaw and the area where my finger goes "in" (where the bone ends and the soft part of your throat begins) is where I shave down. All the way down.
I gotta shave the neck area at least every 2 days. If I wait any longer after that it extra effort to glide the razor, sometimes causing it to irritate my skin.
i think it seems to be a consensus that shaving (or at least, trimming) the underside of the neck is a wise idea. keep it jawline and above. or if you're going to have anything below, keep it short.
lol

Holy crap!

You look like Randy Quaid.
You want to shave it about a centimetre below your jawline. Lean back in the mirror when you're shaving and pull your skin taut. Start at the bottom of the neck and shave around, working your way up slowly. Shave too close to the jawline and it'll look patchy, but leave too much and you'll get a hanging shelf of fluff when it grows out a little. Once you've got that centimetre band below the jawline you might want to taper it as it reaches the hinge of your jaw, because it will grow more vertically back there.
