PED Deaths in TO

I agree with Jayx on two points, first lowering speed limits will not solve this problem. I'm not too worried about this proposal actually getting to ground, as it will get stuck in a committee through the next election. Second, pedestrians are just as at fault for many of these incidents. Seniors are notorious for jaywalking, and pedestrians in dark colours at night can't complain when drivers can't see them.

That said, there are two habits I've seen from drivers in Toronto that are pedestrian accidents waiting to happen (I'm a runner, I've had more near misses than I can count!). The worst is drivers pulling out of a driveway or parking lot, looking right, looking left (for the next 10 seconds), and then pulling out without looking right again. In the 10 seconds they looked left I walked or ran into the path of the car. When they start to pull out and get startled because I'm right there, my kind response is a solid fist to the hood - WAKE UP!

The second dangerous habit is drivers cruising through stop signs while making right hand turns. I know that this habit has been the direct cause of a couple of the recent accidents. It's a stop sign, it doesn't matter if there isn't anybody there - STOP MOFOs! No Idaho Stops!

so you have drank the kool aid?

Yes, I answered my phone as I did hundreds and hundreds of times before the ban. I have never hit anyone or come close to it. I'm not gonna feel bad or apologize for doing it after the ban. The only difference between then and now is that the government has passed legislation that is now a substitute for personal accountability. We already had careless driving laws that could have been enforced but of course the nanny state had to make sure we were firmly under their thumb.

So are you judging me cuz I answered my phone or broke the law...just curious

Frequent pedestrian runovers here on the w. coast too. When it's rainy and dark they are hard to see. Especially when they (we) wear all black!

jaywalker fines next?

Toronto... what a joke

Well, you got two things right, points I agree completely on.

First, Toronto is a joke, a big joke at that.

Secondly, the electorate in Toronto is in-fact brain dead. Not *just* the electorate though, most of the residents.

This is just another step along the path of Toronto becoming a police-state, old people town.

I'm just saying "PUT THE PHONE DOWN AND CONCENTRATE ON DRIVING".

And that's not to just you but EVERYONE.

my roommate refuses to use neither the hands-free nor the bluetooth - she just continues to talk on the phone while driving, even between the cities on the highway, so silly!

A lot of people just dont give a shit.

I think people are starting to suffer from ban fatigue. In other words, they are starting to ignore bans because there are just too many of them. Which essentially is what the government wants. More ban breakers = more revenue and thats what this is really about in the first place.

i disagree...imo people just want to be adamant and 'fight the power' for cheap thrills (yea i'm seriously saying that)

totally
I was like - "well you're the one strongly against drunk driving"
technically, isn't both drunk driving and talking on the phone driving classified as careless driving?
at the end of the day I just want her a. not to get a hefty ticket and b. get home alive

perhaps..

but either way i still suggest that its too many rules that are tiring people out.

Add me to that category. Ive stopped giving a shit too. I either avoid situations where im going to be dicked around (like trying to go anywhere downtown during the day) or i just do as i what (within reasonable limits) and hope the commies wont catch me!

yup thats right, i talk on my phone, speed in artificially low speed traps and (god forbid) sleep in my car if im too drunk to drive home!

Im such a law breaking menace!!! Someone call Mcguinty!!

um no...

drunk driving is a criminal offence. Talking on the phone is a traffic offense.

Both very different situations and very different sections of the law.

You really cant compare the two.

Drunk driving (im talking over .08 and not mcguintys .05 BS law) is rightfully classified as a criminal act and the punishment is fitting.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT I WASN'T CONCENTRATING!! ya i yelled back..

as I stated I have never come close to hitting anyone or anything while talking on a cell phone which was LEGAL until recently....so for many, many years something that was OK in the eyes of everyone is now something to be frowned upon because our lawmakers say it's illegal...

unless you yourself have never talked on a cell phone in your car and have ALWAYS championed banning them..in which case..you can judge me

ps, i thought i was responding to vince this whole time..i curse your avatar!

I wasn't thinking in terms of legal terms, but I can't word myself correctly for some reason (FOB moment )

welcome to how society has villified smokers and is now about to launch the same war on drinkers and junk food eaters.

Social engineers seek to change behaviour by making it shameful in the eyes of society with their "think of the children/health care system!" arguements.

even then it should be left at a difference of opinion. Not transformed into laws!

LOL well even still its a slippery slope arguement. I could take your arguement and successfully argue for a ban on radios, passengers, and even adjusting the AC based on the premise you have given here.

Posted by Dark_Archonis on Jan-26-2010 23:26:

Social engineering amazes me.

on a related note, about my money making scam. stats have just been released about the new speed cams installed on some highways over here.

8494 fines averaging 164$ each from a single camera in a 4 months period!!! (over 4M$ annualized from a single camera!!!)

Something is seriously wrong here. And no the camera is working perfectly to specifications... I'll let you guess.

since i hate headsets, yes I have always used the speakerphone on my phone while driving or pulled over to the side. I have personally been in a car that has almost been run into by an idiot on a phone not once, not twice but several times. They however do not realize that they almost hit someone and you probably are one such person.

so what is this knee-jerk reaction to? didn't quite get that part..

a bunch of pedestrians that got run over in the last couple of weeks in toronto.

Oddly enough, 1 was hit by a streetcar and another by a bus. But that shouldnt get in the way of a good anti-car arguement in city hall i guess.

wow..talk about making assumptions based on your unsubstantiated dislike for my internet persona...

funny thing is, I have never judged you or called you any names...even though you like to rag on me regularly...

i'm sure you never speed either right?

People who dictate their lifestyles onto others rarely appareciate it when the favour is returned.

Its like the person who is a social drinker who is against smoking etc etc...
