^^^^

exactly.

they are totally stupifying the RPG experience with this stuff.

It reminds me of the old Dragon's Lair arcade games... why is SqEnix striving back towards that?

LOL what? Those things are just the foundation for what an RPG is, the game is missing so much more.

Without a world to explore, you're doing nothing more than watching an interactive movie. I'm told that you can't even go backwards in the game up to a point. So it's even worse than FFX in regards to it's limitations.

Keyword, "limitations". In a world where our consoles are only getting more powerful, these idiots took what should be an epic RPG experience, and locked you into a one-way alley with a few battles and lots of cutscenes.

The main draw towards RPGs, right from the start, was putting you into a world that you can explore and interact with. Where's the exploration in a giant one-way hallway? Where's the interaction when all you need to do to find the next treasure chest is wait til there's a bump to the left or right from that hallway on the minimap? You can't even talk to the citizens of the world you're saving!

FF13 is a pile of rubbish. But I'm glad that you're enjoying your experience. I can admit that I too love some HORRIBLE games.

Sorry, you just sound like a butthurt fanboy at this point. I wouldn't even call the game an RPG, it's just a fun fucking game. The story is entertaining, the cutscenes and voice acting are pretty stellar, and I actually find myself caring about the characters as opposed to FF10 and 12 where I fucking hated them all. It seems like you're way too hung up on your expectations of what this game should be.

Have you even played it, or are you just basing your whining on conjecture and reviews? I know I felt the same way as you did before I actually played the thing. The game definitely has it's faults, and there's some disappointment with the things are missing, but it's a game, it's fun, and it does what it tries to do well. It's more movie than it is RPG, that's for sure, but it actually pulls it off well, and I'm impressed with that.

lol, i feel ya on that. tbh the part that i hated the most about ffvi is the floating continent. don't ask me why, it really isn't that bad.. but i've got a savestate right before getting on there and i just can't seem to get myself to play through that quick 15 minute segment. gotta wait for shadow.... /dork. and again, if chrono trigger wasn't so dumbed down with the techs, items, etc, it perhaps would be my favorite.

have you guys checked out a few of the lesser known snes rpg's? terranigma, illusion of gaia (to a lesser extent), star ocean? good stuff. i'm playing through terranigma again right now.

also, totally agree with earthbound being one of those replayable games. i've played through that ****** a billion times. still can't get that one bat that's almost as strong as the casey bat, just without the shitty accuracy/hit. i think you gotta win it from a starman deluxe... i dunno.

So far, my impression is generally favorable given my extremely low expectations. The game is extremely linear, at least early on, and isn't without its warts, but the combat system and, thus far, storyline (which, in my view, are the two most important elements of a jRPG) are both decidedly above-average by the standards of the post-90s genre.

I'll reserve judgment beyond that until I've had a chance to play more of the game.

FF7 was by far the best final fantasy. Truly an epic game.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana also 2 gems from Square!

What is it with breaking formula these days? I haven't played this latest addition so I will reserve judgement, but from what it sounds like they have screwed up with this latest FF and the latest Resident Evil was god awful and nothing like the past games. 2 of my fav games from the past!!

Just ordered it this morning. Will be here in a few days.

as long as u know what u are in for I'm over the jrpg of late, because of this style with cutscene after cutscene. I'm going to finish it after I get through Dragon Age Awakenings, which is fantastic. Bioware really has this whole game making thing down to a science.

I've played FF8 and FF10 in the past, and both were pretty cool. I don't have massively high expectations or anything. I'm hoping there will be a little more freedom in the game once it progresses, but I suppose we'll see.

i like SoM due to nostalgia, but imo it's really not that great of a game. very, very repetitive. hack and slash hack and slash hack and slash. beat palette-swapped enemy and boss copies. collect new elemental seed. wash, rinse, repeat. over and over and over again. it got very tiring by the end of the game. SoM2 (seiken densetsu 3) was even worse when it came to that boring pattern. i think secret of evermore was a far more entertaining game (and made by the american branch of square, so it's more of a uhm.. ARPG(?) instead)

when i think of "final fantasys that should not be used as a reference of quality of the series" 8 and 10 both spring to mind. play 6 and 7 homie!

It's a watered down interactive movie. My expectations were met to a tee. I knew exactly what they were going to foist on us, and I'm not disappointed, because one thing I love more than playing video games, is being right. And I was.

Fantastic, you like it for all the reasons I hate it. What used to be a flagship RPG series is now a flashy movie experience. I meant it when I said I'm glad you're enjoying it, so enjoy away.

At the time, there was nothing like it, huge open world envorinment, stunning graphics and a great storyline with characters you actually cared about! Spent so much time on this game it actually got better the more times I played it.

Alot of people have being bashing ff13 for having no open world map/minigame's etc and being to linear (Still an awesome game non the less), reason for this is because a few gig of content was cut from the original ff13 after microsoft invested to have it released on the xbox so it could fit onto there shitty compressed CD. Anyways aside from that theres a new FF13 VS's coming out exclusive to PS3 and being development a few years so you hardcore FF fans will be happy to know it will be twice as big as ff13, Will include a massive world map / towns, airships and ground vehicles to pilot and travel in (Just like ff7) and without a dout a simular type of funfair like the gold saucer also from ff7 to include minigames etc, Fuck yeah im pumped for this!.

not really, i just hate people making ridiculous excuses along "partisan" lines. as if linearity is down to file size, rofl you know what one of the biggest contributors is? fvcking graphics. they could've cut a few movies to improve aspects of the game, but oh no, its shit sandwich #1's fault hahaha.

Posted by Rodrico on Mar-20-2010 17:21:

I bought my copy, and havent even played it yet...GOW3, DA:A, then Monster Hunter 3, then Super Street Fighter 4, and Red Dead Redemption. FFXIII is the last thing on the plate.

Good thing I love shit. And sandwiches.

The only thing I will contest is that I am not a console fanboy. Not at all.

Exactly! In exchange for pretty pictures, we get more and more watered down games. And it all started with FF7. Fuckin POS game.

Posted by WhooCares on Mar-30-2010 03:29:

just passed the game! woo these main bosses are easier compared to other ff games i played, but i over all enjoyed it. battle system is a bit repetitive but it makes it challenging having to figure out what works and what doesn't.
