If u happen to be using uTorrent (or try it with whatever u are using)...right click the file---->bandwidth..make sure upload is not unlimited. I have personally seen torrents download slowly because of this even when u have your upload capped in the settings.

try increasing your half-open tcp connections to 80 or more

My last recommendation is to reboot your router. Linksys routers especially start to fuck up when u run a torrent client for a long time. They store connections in memory and after a while it gets overloaded and slows everything down. I had to reboot a lot when I used a WRT54G.

it must be something specific with the torrent client, perhaps its something to do with the rate of data being written to the drive as you're downloading?? the write cache or something??

Mikey: Try to use a non-standard port. Make sure that it isn't one in the low range. Also, XP handles network traffic VERY differently than Win7. A torrent opens a lot of connections, so this could be the issue. I suspect that it is. As Kadomony suggested, change the half open connections. Are you using uTorrent?

When I used XP on my old computer, with the same ISP/connection I have now, the fastest I could DL stuff was only ever about 700-800kb/s (once or twice I broke the 1MB/s speed, but only from Australian servers fairly close-by. As soon as I upgraded my shit, I started getting regular speeds of 1.5-2.5MB/s from all over the place. Is that because of Win7? Or just that I got a faster computer?

i would've guessed neither. OS's/PCs have negligible effect on how fast your downloads can go. its all about ISPs, line quality & seeders (if we're talking about torrents).

I actually hardly ever use torrents. I was talking about directly downloading from a server (for example, my own webspace). The difference in speed was immediately noticeable. I upgraded PC and OS at the same time though, so I wasn't sure which one was causing the speed increase.

dunno, but like i said it shouldnt really make a difference, unless there's some settings that were changed with the new guts & software.

im still stuck @ 150kb max speed internode are building a new exchange so hoping that will increase soon. fuck you tasmania.

Same router and cables, and I don't think my network card is any faster than my last one was either.

150kb/s is a bit gay. Internode are apparently good though. When we switched from Telstra we wanted to go with them (they have a faster upload speed cap) but they don't run from the exchange near us, so we went with iiNet instead. And the exchange is about 300m away too, so it's nice and fast for ADSL2+

Nope.

For some reason download speed in killerbytes per second on the net is slightly above number of killerbits divided by 10. I'm not sure why, I think it has to do with bits to confirm messeges and stuff.

I would overall say the same thing, but with Win7, they totally overhauled the TCP stack. They did a bit of tweaking on it in Vista, but with Win7 they totally redid it. It manages network traffic much, much better.

That is what I use too, and I regularly can get 2MB/s. I rarely do because there are rarely enough fast seeds to do it, but it happens once in a while. 1.2MB/s is pretty common though.

Is there anyway to change the half open connections without the use of a patch?

If nothing has worked at this point, I would go over to the uTorrent forums and ask there.

Well I haven't tried changing half open connections yet. I just wondered if it was a setting you could manually amend without the use of a patch.

Not that I am aware of. The patch is the only thing I have ever seen.

I had the same issue a few years back (except with an already faster onnection but limitation of speed). I can't quite remember the name, but there is an unofficial tweak you can get for XP that changes some of the files that deal with the way in which XP handles TCP/IP connections... limiting the number of incoming connections.

When you run the patch, XP warns you that you're altering system files etc etc, but make the change anyway.

Seems to have done the trick. I'm still not getting the full 60, but it's up from approximately 30 to about 55 now. Good stuff.
