You're spot on. These guys do a simple version of that, except just one level of blocks.

The trade-off is between the complexity of software control/planning algorithms and the complexity of building the actual mechanism. You can do robust block stacking with simple hardware and incredible algorithms or you can use simple algorithms and incredible hardware. Seems like the latter can get more mileage though.

Actually, there is. It's called clarity, and making it easier for readers to know what he's talking about. Why would that be a problem anyway?
