-- Security for G20/G8 Summits in Canada will cost AT LEAST $830 MILLION

After reading the big article in the globe, I kind of see how it adds up. The two summits together is an enormous undertaking. And comparing it to the Olympics is like apples and oranges - big deal the Olympics was 20 or so days - the threat on 20 world leaders over a one week period is far far bigger than anything Olympic related.

The violent protesters are costing my tax dollars. If they were all peaceful, I'd be happier.

Posted by hardcore trancer on May-26-2010 19:08:

This doesnt make any sense at all. How is that the G20 at in 2009 held London cost ONLY $30 millions,The official price tag for security at last year's G20 summit in Pittsburgh was listed at $18 million US, according to municipal and U.S. federal officials.so why on earth would cost the Canadians $930 millions?

A billion to secure a meeting where a bunch of world criminals gather to figure out how to fix their debt problems and get their picture taken?

Posted by jester on May-26-2010 19:14:

thats a big sum. It for sure has to be a typo. If its not. Now thats some big spending for no reason, when it could go towards Arctic defence and newer subs and frigates.

If they want security they should buy a private island or at least do the meetings on military bases. Shit just borrow a cruise ship lol

Posted by malek on May-26-2010 19:16:

I think most of that figure are salaries that will already be spent on these officers/cops, specialists... it's not like they'll hire thousands of RCMP officers for a week alone.

I think this figure is more about impressing the world that we are big ballers, we take this shit seriously.

The cost is for both the G20 and the G8 combined.
There is a breakdown in the globe of what is going where.

I saw on the news today that this is actually going to top 1 Billion. Fuck man what a waste.

Posted by Orko on May-26-2010 21:01:

What we really need to look at obviously is cost/benefit. Are we going to receive $1b of benefit from this cost? Hells fuckin no.

These nitwits have proved they cannot sort out a country's, or world's economic problems, especially considering they cause most of them.

My MP is going to get an earful.

Now $1.1 billion and counting. Any bets this thing goes to $2 billion?

The cost of hosting the G8 and G20 summits next month in Ontario now stands at $1.1 billion and further costs are likely, federal documents show.

That's much higher than the $933 million security bill the Tories revealed earlier this week.

The federal government is spending another $160 million for the international summits, beyond the $933 million for policing the events.

Liberal MP Mark Holland calls it the most expensive 72 hours in Canadian history.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? now they will get a shitload of angry citizens protesting against this spending at the summit. This is beyond ridiculous now.

Posted by jester on May-26-2010 23:32:

wow $1.1 billion now. I better be getting a tax cut for the next 10 years.

Its about 9 x F-22 Raptor so far

We need to hold an election TODAY and throw these conservative monkeys out of the office ASAP. This is our money being wasted here and we are being robbed.

do you really think any other government would spend less??? maybe the NDP but definatly not the Liberals. They are all crooks, and Orko said it best, are WE the citizens getting a return on this "investment", I hardly think so, and whats worse is I'm sure the businesses that are surely going to be disturbed or destroyed will most likely not be compensated.

Posted by daves on May-27-2010 01:31:

how many adscams would it have taken to cost taxpayers 1.1b dollars?

Posted by Abercrombie on May-27-2010 02:43:

For those attending the protests, you better cause enough dammage to get our money's worth.

You'd have to take out, give or take a few city blocks for that number to be $1.1 billion.

I say take the no prisoners approach. Bye bye politicians.

The breakdown;

quote:
According to a copy of the Supplementary Estimates (A), 2010-11, that has been posted to the Treasury Board of Canada website, the additional $654 million will be split among the following departments:

-Royal Canadian Mounted Police -- $321.5 million
-Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness -- $262.6 million
-National Defence -- $63.1 million
-Others - $6.7 million

The document says the additional funding will be used to:

-design, plan, coordinate and implement security operations for the summits
-provide the RCMP and its security partners with accommodation
-facilities for the G8 and G20 Summits
-procure information technology and portable communication assets
-work with federal, provincial and municipal security partners responsible for providing Summit security
-ensure the safekeeping of all International Protected Persons attending the summits

Yeah, imagine it will all be peaceful, then it would be a hell of a financial debacle. Come on, this is Canada and not USA or UK where the anarchists are batshit crazy (or is it just the agent provocateurs). The last one in Canada was so boring, that police had to get their own agent provocateurs going to make the headlines more worthwhile, as they had nothing else to tell the media. I really hope (I know its hopeless) that they better dam achieve something BIG or IMPORTANT at this 2010 G8/G20, because I will be keeping my eye very very closely on the developments this time around.

hold on, you think the NDP might spend less than all of them? Do you really know the NDP?

No the NDP would triple the cost spending money to make sure that equal number of women and men were hired, visible minorities and handicapped security guards for starters.

Toronto Police Purchased 4 "Sound Cannons" For G20: Report

The near $1 billion price tag for the upcoming G8 and G20 summits may have your head spinning, but crowd control devices acquired by Toronto Police will have you covering your ears.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, authorities purchased four long range acoustic devices, or L-RADs, also known as sound cannons, for the upcoming G20 summit June 26th and 27th.

Police said the devices will likely be used as communication devices. The L-RADs also double as loud speakers.

Authorities in Pittsburgh were criticized for their use of sound cannons during the G20 summit last September when they unleashed an assault of piercing beeps before throwing tear gas and stun grenades to disperse a crowd marching toward the summit venue. It was the first time sound cannons had been used in public.

The truck-mounted model can emit an ear-splitting 143 decibels, far above the pain threshold of 110 to 120dB.

Some worry that if misued L-RADs could violate protesters rights.

The Star reports three of the four L-RADs purchased by Toronto Police are handheld models capable of emitting sound heard up to 600 metres away with a volume up to 135dB.

Wow that is messed up. 143 dBs?!

What if you just used hearing protection???

Posted by StereoPrincess on May-27-2010 14:18:

I didn't read it, but I disagree with anything said in the above post.

The Canadian idiots are relatively few, the problem is the international professional protesters/lunatics that like to play the global circuit. As part of the security team from the Olympics, I can tell you that most Black Bloc protestors weren't from Canada - a few were American, most were European.

As much as we'd like to have a low security profile for this type of event, it's just not possible in today's climate. Although many of you complain about the security pricetag, how many here would complain about the cleanup bill from a weeks worth of violent protests, vandalism, and other property destruction? Would it be in the $1 billion range? Not likely, but as we all know, sometimes it's not the value of the damage, but the strategic placement of the damage. Is it completely out to lunch to consider what would happen if protestors disrupted the Yonge/Bloor subway station for a week? Certainly not $1 billion worth of damage, but almost as much in economic disruption because it's harder for people to travel through the city.

That's the primary reason for the security price tag.

As for the figures cited for meetings in Pittsburgh, I can tell you that those are low-balled figures from the city on what THEY spent, not the total operation. American military spending on that operation was over $200 million. You can bet that state police, FBI, NSA, CIA, and a host of other organizations had significant budgets for that event.
