/mp3
/mp3/download
/mp3/download/ag
/mp3/download/dc
/mp3/download/gift
/mp3/download/kazaa
/mp3/download/incoming
/mp3/download/opennap
/mp3/download/bearshare
/mp3/playlists
/mp3/music
/mp3/music/livesets
/mp3/music/unsorted
/mp3/music/techno
/mp3/music/trance
/mp3/vinylrip (rips of my own records)

Download is a where new files go, I have a different download directory for every filesharing program I have, as to limit potential problems with partial downloads, since I often use more than one.

Playlists is where I store text playlists.

Music is where music goes. There used to be non-electronica stuff in there, but its been all removed.

Vinylrips is where (suprise!) I keep copies of all of my records in mp3 format.

Edit: Oh yeah, and i have every directory divided into sub directories by artist name (original name, not remixer). I also have them all ID3 tagged, and have a consistant file naming scheme throughout Artist - (sometimes albumn) - (track number) - Title.mp3.

Did I mention I have too much time on my hands?

Posted by Flec on Jul-22-2002 02:48:

Music
Rock: by artist (alphabeticly)
Rap: by artist (alphabeticly)
Trance:
Cds-> by artist (alphabeticly)
Live sets-> by artist (alphabeticly) , and by party/event
Singles-> by artist (alphabeticly)
Techno
Other

i only have cds in every genre except trance where i also have singles and livesets

there is about 50 gigs in my collection and it takes me about 10 seconds ( maybe less) to find the track i wanna hear

First by genre, then alphabetically in each folder. My new stuff sits in the main mp3 folder until filed away.

mp3
Breaks & Other Electronic
Classical & Opera
Dead Can Dance
Epic Trance
(Dreamy, spacey stuff that's still dancible, such as Armin's Seven Cities mix)
Ethnic
Europop & House
Hard - Psy - Tech Trance
Incomplete mp3
(For incomplete rips or partial mp3s)
Madonna (She's her own genre )
Mixes & Albums (Livesets are by DJ or thrown in the main folder)
>Banco Be Gaia
>BT
->ESCM
>Compilations
>Dirty Vegas
>Marco V
>Oakenfold
>Paul Van Dyk
>Sasha
->Xpander EP
>Tiesto
->In My Memory
Non-Electronic
North Korea
(don't ask)
Progressive - Acid - Tribal
Progressive Trance
Soft Trance & Ambient
Trance
(By far the largest folder. Stuff between progressive and uplifting/epic)
Trash (A sort of 'filter' so I don't delete tracks on impulse)
Trip Hop
Uplifting Trance
(different from 'Epic Trance' in that such tracks usually have clear, solo vocals or cheesy riffs)

What can I say, I'm a neatfreak.

I have one main MP3 folder on my desktop and then I sort all my MP3s into folders by the date on which I burned that set to CD. And then I have folders for certain artists too like all of Armin's stuff, Tiesto, Matt Darey, DuMonde, etc...

I just burn all of my mp3's to cd's. Then I use a catalog program to put them into a database so I can find them back easily.

I use the mp3 collector

Posted by vmc on Jul-22-2002 11:01:

here are my rules :

1) labelling mp3s as 'ARTIST - Title'
for eg. 'PAUL VAN DYK - Columbia (Original mix).mp3'
2) recording them onto CDs (a cd contains only single mp3s)
3) having an mp3 list in xls format where I can see where (on which cd) is the file I'm looking for.

works perfectly.

Artist - Title (Remix)

Posted by netw3rkd on Jul-22-2002 13:00:

well i have it like this...

Shared_Shit
-----------
Music
-----------
0-day
Armin van Buuren
DJ Fuzion
DJ Spike Mike
DJ Tiesto
Ferry Corsten
Jumping Jack
Jungle and Drum and Bass
Matt Darey
Mauro Picotto
Paul van Dyk
Reciently Downloaded and Unsorted (My DC download folder)
Sander Kleinenburg
Sensation The Black Edition
More Live Sets and Mixes (Where I stick everything I don't want to sort (basically everything now ))
Singles (Singles go in there)

I could probably sort it better, but it would take to damn long

how i sort 30gb of MP3s

one dedicated partition for trance, by years:
/1999
/2000
/2001
/2002
/ancient <-- 1998 & before
/incomplete <-- usually radio rips & album cuts
/scratch

another partition for all other types of muzik:
/classical
/downtempo
/jazz-funk
/newage
/pop
/rock
/scores
/uptempo
/urban
/world

and yet another partition for albums ready to be burnt onto CDRs, under the /To_Burn/ directory:

Music/downtempo
Music/electronic_live
Music/mix_compilations
Music/rock
Music/trance_albums

i tag all my MP3s religiously, and that's how i handle the BPM, labels, sub-sub-sub-genres, artists and stuff.
