j00f is in a league of his own.
actually, i think j00f and chris lawrence are two DJs who play trance closest to its original form (like, early 90s trance)
Was good seeing everyone on Friday night and I had a blast as I'd expect to have with a scenario such as this. I've written a review of the night for Trancealert which will also have the tracklist updated for those interested. Cheers.

| My experience (at ASOT 450, PVD at Space Miami, other random shows at guv, gf playing Armin, Corsten, etc) is that there's almost ALWAYS a dominant kickdrum every beat and dominant snare every second beat. A melody builds up, a snare roll ensues, then that same melody plays with the said kick drum and snare, then breakdown. |
check out the psy download thread and download some fo the sets listed there.| quote: |
| I never really liked any of those shows (it's like dancing to a ticking clock, tick-tock, tick-tock, drum-snare), save for a few good breakdowns. And vocals, eww :P |
| quote: |
| But this had basslines, repetitive elements that build and fade, rhythms, music I was able to get into! It lived up to his essential mix! Maybe it's because it's "psytrance"? I don't know too much about the genre. I'll have to download the whole set and give it a listen. |

I personally thought J00f killed it! I stayed until 4am, which for me these days is late. lol I was worried that his sound wouldn't suit a small venue like Vola, but he proved me wrong! Really relentless set. I would have liked it a bit 'darker', but I was still satisfied with the tracks he chose. He had a smile on his face the entire set, which is always nice to see. He still stands out as one of the most talented Dj's I've ever seen.
THE CROWD WAS HORRIBLE THOUGH. Which might explain that random retarded email Oz got. I was pushed out of the way at the front by two completely hammered idiots so they could worship J00f, even know they had no idea what type of music he was playing. And the one dude kept yelling his name, and putting his camera right in his face. I tried talking some sense into him, but dude was clueless, and way too drunk. And too much porno dancing!!! gawd! There's always the random weirdos at Vola, but this night, the crowd was a complete turn off on so many levels. Obviously not the clubs fault, but it was unfortunate non the less.
Thanks for another great booking Vola! Aside from the crowd, it was another great night of music

I feel worse for J00f though having this bag of shambles in his face. |
woo amazing night
J00F delivered!!!! I especially enjoyed the last hour of his set where he went pounded us with some full on. Crowd didn't bother me, lots of familiar faces
also wasn't too packed which was great.
Thanks pure trance! Can't wait till J00F is back

(this is gonna be really long people).| quote: |
| This past Friday night, I attended one of the more anticipated events that has hit the Toronto club scene; John 00 Fleming headlining for a 5 hour set at one of the better venues in the city, Vola Nightclub. This was to be my 7th time seeing him play but easily the smallest venue and longest time slot, so to say I was excited would be a very big understatement. The night started off with a massive power outage that affected the whole of the downtown core. What normally would take 5-10 minutes to navigate from the highway to the club ended up taking closer to 40 minutes. As we approached the club, what would normally be a busy, bar/club district of town filled with people was actually darker than an empty train tunnel! It was so dark that my friend who was driving actually missed the club (haha). Upon arriving at the club, everyone that had already arrived was waiting outside as a security measure. I've never seen anything like this before. This didn't seem to dampen the mood and by the time everyone had finished making their jokes about the situation, the lights were back on to everyone's delight. Now, why am I bringing this up? This changed the entire outline of the night in regards to timing. Aerodrmme was assigned the task of opening the night. What was supposed to be a live PA set from approximately 10-11:15 turned into a set of roughly the same time but from 10:35-11:50. Boris (more famous under his DJing alias Shankar from Tribal Vision Records) and Steve (also known under his producing alias Nexus7) played their signature Minimal/Techno/Progressive fusion with psychedelic influences to a small yet energetic crowd. A lot of their tracks have been very well produced and are tweaked for the club sound. Unfortunately, I disagree with putting them in this timeslot as it did come across as being much too heavy for this time of night. Good set, wrong timing. Around 11:50 came on Pure Trance resident DJ Angelo Petrucci. Having not seen Angelo before, I was curious to know what he would play. Unfortunately, a lot of us were impatient to know when J00F was going to come on at this point as we knew the club would have to close at 5am for legal purposes and the clock was pitiless telling us that it would not be a 5 hour set as advertised. To be fair to Angelo, I can't really comment much on his set. My mind had been in many other places at the time so to critique would be unfair. Finally, around 1:15, John '00' Fleming hit the decks. With all the disruptions, strange occurrences and unanswered questions that people had before this moment of the night, it all disappeared as he pressed play on the CDJ's. The lights were also turned off as promised by the promoters which gave the vibe a different dimension. John had mentioned in this month's blog he would be doing things similar to this for his J00F edition nights so I'm guessing this was a bit of a test run. John started off progressive with an acid tech style of progressive trance. He really tried to blend in off of the tempo that Angelo had set and then took things up a notch around the time he dropped the still to be identified remix of "Union Jack-Two Full Moons and a Trout". This was when the set really started to take off into a hypnotic frenzy of progressive trance; something the Toronto crowd rarely gets with John as he usually is booked in time slots where he would be regressing the night if he was playing this sort of material. This part of the set came to a climax when he dropped the Kintar Remix of Michael & Levan's track "Angel Dream". In all honesty I was never convinced of the true magnitude of this track like others have been but I am completely sold now. The layering of this track comes out so well on a live system that it really feels like it has a life of it's own. From then on, it was the J00F sound that most associate with him. The driving, full on psychedelic sound which has been trademarked for so long now. It was nice to hear some great productions from Allaby and E-Clip which had been played many times on his radio show. As everything seemed to be going as planned, another strange occurrences happened as a technical error brought the music to a stop. Luckily, the problem was fixed and J00F banged out the night until around 4:40am. Conclusion: Although there are many ways to look on the negative side of the evening, there was not a dull moment amongst the crowd. The crowd was still around 65% full from the ones who had been there from his first track which shows that he had done a great job at reading them. 8/10. Tracks of the night: Easily the two best tracks were the Angel Dream remix as mentioned and the currently unidentified track which was played after Allaby-Imaginarium (Burn in Noise Remix). If anyone knows the name of it, please feel free to mention it. |

Had a great time. Club was adequate...loved the closeness of everything. But that wasn't a 5-hour set!?
J00F is one of the few remaining DJs/producers left that I still get hyped for - and am never disappointed. Digweed and Speedy J are the others (good company!)
Next stop - CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE 5 Hour set.
So sad I missed this...been soo fucking busy for the past couple of months
