I'll accept that.

I didn't watch the video; however, wouldn't it be more frightening if they simply accepted a rejection of their religious beliefs by their child. What I mean is if the parents honestly believe that their faith is entirely accurate / true and that failure to practice said faith would result in any number of negative consequences including but not limited to eternal damnation then it would seem far worse to me if they did not react negatively, as that would equate to indiffernce toward their own child. Your use of the word snap suggests the reaction was unpleasent, so maybe there could have been a better approach but indifference would be really scary, as who could be indifferent to their own child?

No, because while choosing to disregard faith is often the end product of rational and drawn out thought on many things that are far more sane than any sort of idea about a deity, those that have chosen a path of logic and scientific fact are just frustrated and annoyed by people that do not. When those people are your parents its even more annoying because you feel that your parents are legitimately less intelligent than you are. That is often not the most comforting feeling.

My comments were regarding the parents, Nou. If the parents honestly believe what they profess to and don't try to dissway their child from leaving the faith then that shows indifference.

The problem isn't that the parents are angry/upset..It's the tactics they use to "dissway" their kids. Threatening punishment..expulsion from the house..a complete cutoff of financial support, etc is not the way to go about changing minds. It only pushes the son/daughter further away.

What do you expect from people who ostensibly believe their lives are lorded over by an invisible, all-powerful entity who's primary concern in the entire universe is what members of the human species do with their genitalia?

Yeah, it really shouldn't be surprising. It's not like they have much else up their arsenal when it comes to persuasion. In my experience most older religious folks have never critically examined their beliefs or even considered the possibility that they may be wrong. When someone close to them does look at the issue and has good reasons for doubting, it's like getting hit by a fastball they never saw coming. When people are confused and can't fully grasp a new phenomenon, the most primitive emotions of anger or fear (fight or flight) usually take over.

I agree... but what I'm saying is that if these people truly believe what they profess and simply accepted then it would be more frightenting. Can we not agree that indifference for your child is more disturbing then poor tactics?

Yep, I agreed with that in my second post here.

No need to qualify that with the word older. BTW, I can't stand that... blind faith is actually no faith.
