Sorry if my opinion ain't lollipops and candy.

I'm being blunt. I don't find the beliefs of catholicism valid and that's as simple as that. Ironically, I was born catholic and I had this shit shoved down my throat for a good number of years forcibly by my mother.

so in regards to my opinion,

If you can't take the heat, then I suggest you get out of the kitchen.

Why?! Its his opinion, and what makes your opinion more valid than his? I agree he should express his opinion in a different way, but there's nothing wrong with his last post. Religion is a topic that can be argued endlessly, after all its a belief, but thats not to say that people who practice religion are any more right than ppl who don't.

Im done

Says who, you?

Sorry, but I don't see the state of the world being improved by religion or its leaders, in fact, I see it destroying people more and more by tearing ourselves apart.

Confused Another Opinion...

I dont usually get into religious arguments or conversations but because of Cold Ones blatant opinions about Catholicism and the Pope, Ill have to throw in my two cents. Especially since people as closed minded as himself are ones that would turn their back on people and quickly support the negative side of things. Why? Who knows but its usually the case. Now Im not saying that Atheists always have negative feelings towards religion or act rudely towards people. Just that their blind eye of what religion often stands for can create misconceptions for other people.

Though Im Catholic myself but not practicing I respect what the religion stands for and what it tries to teach people. Im no preacher about God or Christ or Lovebut simply a moralist that believes in things like care & respect & love & peace & happiness &

All the things in the bible may or may not be true but listening to the stories can teach you a lot. Maybe its not true that Jesus fed the poor, clothed the homeless or saved lost souls, but the idea of humans giving a part of themselves to another to help them survive is what I interpret as the point of the story. Unconditional Love Treating people with respect Living a truthful and honest life Helping others when they are down Simple lessons that we can all follow to help people evolve and live peacefully. If thats what a religion stands for then I respect it.

Sure theres fanatics that take things a little too seriously but at least theyre not running around killing people. Yes I know that some religions have religious wars and kill in the name of God but often those people have a distorted view of what religion is and use it as a cover for political issues.

To some people the Pope is over rated like some of the pop stars or djs we listen to but to most people hes a symbol in Catholicism that tries to teach people how to live a better life. So give a little respect instead of bashing him like he is a musician/dj thats just out there to put a show on for an audience.

Now with all this said, Im not trying to prove anyone wrong. Just try to show a little respect for what other people believe in. Especially if its something that tries to improve how humans can live on this planet in harmony.

Agreed 100% Mikman. A debate on religion can go on for years and if people are totally closed-minded on the topic, its near impossible to share your faith with them. However an interesting fact I heard recently is that 80% of the people in the world do believe there is a God out there.

Back on topic, I wanted to go to Mass on Sunday, even though I'm Protestant. Don't know if I can make it though. It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Pope. It'd be awesome just being among the hundreds of thousands of people there, all in peaceful celebration. It just makes me proud of our world Oh well, make sure to post "reviews" if I don't make it

Cold one,

I am sorry to hear about your bad experiences in the past with religion. I myself am Catholic, and like Mikman am not an active practicer but I do see the Pope's visit here as a significant event as do many others. I feel bad for what you've gone through I don't think anyone should be forced to believe in one religion or another since it should totally be their own choice. You are free to express ur opinions about religion and if you don't like Catholicism then it's perfectly fine but at the same time many people are able to go about their lives practicing their religion without tearing themselves apart. Instead they find strength in it, that's all. If it be the will of world leaders and other religious icons to do harm then those are their actions but it does not reflect the intent of every religious follower. Please understand that everyone is different and should be allowed to choose what they follow. This thread was created in order to find out who might be attending the Mass on Sunday and not to create a debate about religion.

I just think that if you want to start a thread about anti-religion where u can state all of your references and research on where it's taking mankind and all the lives in the world it's tearing apart in Israel, China or whereever else then do so but why not make it under a seperate thread? Again I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with all this when you were younger but hopefully one day you can find some peace with it.

Anyways, on the WYD thing , yea so who plans to go ? a "TA Pope meet" sounds interesting hehe ..

Posted by Fir3start3r on Jul-25-2002 05:49:

Why don't we meet up then? (For those going...)

My wife is Catholic, part of the WYD Group and hence she's definately going for a different reason other than myself; I'm going for the pure experience and what will most likey be a pretty good natural high if for no other reason.
Hey...I could stay at home, hunch over my keyboard and bitch about this and that, but really, how many times is the Pope even on this side of the world let alone Toronto.

Let me know, PM me, email or MSN: [email protected]

Im not gonna go into religion or anything....

but what does the pope know?!?! I really think he's lost it (ahhhh....Southpark portrays a perfect image for him)

and I dont wanna offend anybody....but i think religion is just propaganda, thats what religion seems to be about these days.....have they done any good for the world? NO! yes it gives you faith, I can run on faith just by knowing God exists, I don't need anyone telling me what to do or how to do it, or take money out of my pocket....(Vatican has alot of money!! make you wonder!!!).....

or disturbing stories we hear about priests with young boys (maybe that explains why the pope came for World Youth Day )....

I can learn whats right and whats wrong, if you have a conscience (we all do!?!) then you should know what to do....it doesnt mean you'll do it

who are they!?!?! nobody!!! just like me and you.....they just BS

Posted by dEsidEL on Jul-26-2002 02:28:

Angry :[

no one is tellin u how to live.. thatz ur own choice. We have a secular government so itz all about choice. Be glad you don't live in Afganistan or something or one diss about Islam and the Taliban would probably have you castrated. And dood, not agreeing with one's religion is fine, but going out and calling an 89 year-old half crippled man and his religion BS?? man that is almost as bad as being racist. there is no place for that kinda thing here..

man religion is such an easy target for many of you. I'd curse and swear back but then that would just be too 'unCatholic' .. :]

Posted by DJ Chrono on Jul-26-2002 02:55:

i read in a study once that people who follow a religion tend to live 6-8 years longer than other people (or somewhere around that amount).

do you remember that exact reason for that, like what tiggers the human body to live 6-8 years more from just religion???
I don't really think this is really true but you never know...

look @ people that smoke they tend to live longer that healthy people, now why is that???

whatever dood, i dont wanna start a fight with you, thats not like me....its just that is a touchy subject for people thats all, dont diss me, did i diss you!?! I'm saying the same to all religions, not just one, so dont compare it to racism!!! just happen Catholics do all this for the Pope and Im using it as an example....

you called him urself an 89year old half crippled man........and its HIS religion now!?!?! uhhhmmmmmm.....Jesus!!!! wasn't it his??!?! I saw some of his speech live on TV, people clapping and cheering and they dont even know what hes saying (before someone came up to translate it!!)....thats rediculous....useless figures all around the world

I am Muslim, and not a very good one by the book.....Afghanistan is what it is now, and the west is not helping at all! despite what you might be hearing on CNN!!!

but I don't need anyone between me and God! (thats my MAIN point!)....yes the way I live my life is my choice!!!

im gonna stop, and im not gonna post on this thread no more, just because I have difficulty holding myself back, and I dont wanna let loose....It gets to me too much!

Posted by dEsidEL on Jul-26-2002 21:38:

KarateKid :P

alrite man fine.. like i said earlier too itz ur choice. i m Catholic but i'm not devout just like how ur saying ur Muslim and don't practice it. In the end itz everyone's choice .. but i can't be so quick to dismiss the whole religion (Christian, Muslim, Jew, etc.) thing as useless. i'm sure if there was no institution at all not everyone would live like we both do simply adhering to natural laws of right and wrong. and uv course itz a touchy subject cuz itz dealin with pplz beliefs! and i never said this was the Pope's religion. He'z a figurehead and has done some good stuff in his life, but he doesn't OWN in. YEah there are a lotta shitty priests out there but then again what religion is perfect? anyways .. live how you live i'm not telling you what's right and wrong.

peace. :P
