i listen to that stuff all the time. the way i got into it though was completely different than from most accounts ive read here. when i began listening to trance seriously (all the time hunting for tracks, sets) around 2006-7 i wanted to spin, but i wanted to sound different, have more developed sound, etc. i imagined what new forms of music could sound like, so if we take a straight 4/4 beat, i thought the next step was to mix it up a bit and boom, i found i liked IDM (but only when i actually found some stuff in that genre, prior to finding i just imagined there would be stuff like this out there). i got into ambient music because i listened to Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene and i thought that all ambient music would be like trance without the beat/electronic classical music. as time went on, crazier ideas about structure and the kind of sound music can use formed, and i just got into everything i could find. my point here is that i ignored a lot of stuff because i simply could not understand structure - how it develops over time, where certain elements are placed, among other things.

but still, there's alot of stuff ive had to learn to listen to. there's a growing pile of music that ive bought that i haven't touched because im not ready for it yet. incidentally, ever since i began listening to field recordings i listen to background noise like music.

i also find that almost everything is good; that is, i can get into anything. listening to what i listen to is largely a matter of selection. even Kaleidoscope is ok. but i hate it for entirely different reasons - cultural ones. those that have something to do with what i want to happen.
