I don't think he was referring to "trance" as the single genre music that brings out kids. The point he was trying to make (from what i read) is that Reza (the promoter/dj) is bringing out other dj's that cater to a wider selection of music lovers.

Trance was used in reference to massive events primarily booking trance djs obviously because of there huge draw.

A simple reply without the use of insults would have been suitable. I understand you meant nothing personal but c'mon man. We're all friends here.

Ah, I didn't know that. I guess Go Ventures tends to be more house and techno heavy, then?

I just saw the videos of Armin at MM last year and thought it looked amazing, so I assumed this year would be the same sort of thing. That's my bad for being a newbie.

I have some friends from back home that want to fly out here to visit for a massive, but they're big trance fans, and want it to be a large trance lineup. Nocturnal would have been perfect, but the timing doesn't work. (I'll be there, though)

For those in the know, does TAO normally have a large trance presence?

If thats what he was referring to then I'm the moron. His signature set the tone of my response, but no excuse I suppose.

LOL! I guess that sig can throw anyone off too.

No no. I'd say the last few years overall they've made a good effort to be pretty even. Don't get me wrong, the main stages have been straight up trance. But house hasn't necessarily taken a backseat, either.

TAO varies just like MM does. TAO is done jointly by GoVentures (Reza's group which does MM) and Insomniac (who does EDC, Nocturnal, etc). This past NYE it was David Guetta, Digweed, and Markus. TAO hosted Armin Only: Imagine on NYE 2009 (and had others DJs like Deadmau5 on a side stage). Sasha & Digwed + Ferry on NYE 2008. Deep Dish, C Lawrence, & Marco V on NYE 2007. PvD, Judge Jules, and Markus on NYE 2006. You get the idea...

I wonder if they will wait to see how many show up to MM before finalizing TAO stuff. Since the events are all 18+ now and not all ages, I wonder how much of the attendance it's gonna kill. Because a a massive chunk of the audience has def been under 18.

Posted by system-7 on Aug-18-2010 22:01:

house this, trance that. I like house, but I love trance. Has anyone been listening to the amazing tech trance tracks that have been showing up on some of these podcasts (sean tyas, thrillseekers, andy moor). I re-realize why I put House on the back seat 10+ years ago in high school. amazing! and i'm not walking about the overbass'd repetitive tracks everyone complains about. I'm talking about the quantity of catchy themes and the variances in melody that really pull you into the music.

at least on the flier it has, but not at the actual event.. lol

The lack of major trance DJs (outside of GE) is the biggest reason why my friends and I likely will not be going to MM this year. That, and the incredibly stupid line setup last year.

I don't think it's going to hurt attendance at all, I thought about this also.

All the media that the raves have been getting after EDC is reaching tons and tons of people.

Even-though its been bad news the whole time, you have to remember that bad publicity is still publicity.

You think attendance this year will be the same or higher than last year even though it will be an 18+ event?

Wanna bet?

Posted by system-7 on Aug-19-2010 08:01:

I agree, its a little low budget this year. GE.. well okay but everyone else lacks big. I'll skip out this year... again. Please no more Armin.. over played.

Attendance has been going up and up and up for the past few years, hence the reason why MM is "America's Largest Halloween Dance Music Festival."

But considering that HARD is going to be 2 days, I am pretty sure that HARD is going to hurt MM more than making the event 18+. So with that aspect, idk if they can match last years numbers.

Only time will tell, and pre-sale numbers. The pre-sale numbers always reflect towards the end. When they start adding last minute big time DJ's, you know the numbers are good.

I'll say it again: Trance is - or, up until recently, was the genre of choice for the younger EDM fans. The fan base is still represented by a disproportionate amount of minors. It may soon be replaced by terrible electro-house (it's not electro!) and the Guetta/Kaskade-style of "house" that can be compared to the Ministry of Sound and Ultra Euro-Pop craze of the late 90s and early 2000s. It's force-fed to the EDM masses because of its top 40 crossover appeal.

The SoCal massives of recent memory have catered to these genres while neglecting the more "underground" (for lack of a better term) house and techno sounds. This has driven away a very large portion of potential patrons who aren't necessarily excited about 135+ BPM for 10 hours on end. Monster Massive has been the only one of its kind to fully represent everything on a seemingly equal basis. For that, I have big respect for Reza/Go Ventures.

Thank you, Billy, for getting my back on this. But my mild dickery was purposeful in sparking some heated debate about MM and all massives in general. I deserved the insults since I was digging at the trance heads initially. Hell, my signature says it all.

What's with Go Ventures this year? Love Festival Vegas had a great lineup, but LoveFest LA has pretty much NO trance, and now Monster Massive looks practically trance-less, too.

I mean the MM 2009 videos of Armin look amazing, but... without a huge trance DJ, this year isn't going to be like that.

At least Insomniac is showing trance some love with EDC/Nocturnal.

I hope TAO books some good talent this year. It won't be Armin, since he's scheduled to perform in some other country on NYE.

I agree. Last year they had an incredible setup and an amazing line up. See this video this video of the epic Armin stage at MM last year. TAO last year was amazing too. I love the lay out with the mega stage outside where I can breathe.

Looking to me like Electric Daisy Carnival (AvB and A&B) will be the highlight of 2010. Nocturnal is good but I've seen Schulz twice and Ferry Corsten at last years Nocturnal. I love both

Like Monster Massive 2010, Love Festival 2010 isn't worth the ticket price either. I'm sure it'll fun for first timers and those who haven't seen those artists of course.

The first massive I ever attended was Together As One 08-09 with the ARMIN ONLY NYE COUNTDOWN (epic video). Now that was an epic experience and the countdown I linked is something I won't ever forget. I've been listening to every ASOT episode since.

I'm really hoping Armin van Buuren changes his mind about doing NYE at 2010/12/31 Melbourne, Australia - Future Entertainment presents Armin Only @ Venue TBA

Venue TBA? Cammmaaaaaaaannn Armin. You know we love you here in Los Angeles! Make my Christmas wish come true this year and do an Armin ONLY show at TAO this year. We know you're reading this.

Btw, does anybody know why concerts/raves aren't going past 2AM anymore? Something to do with a new law in Los Angeles or something maybe?

trance is definitely the least popular, and all the kandi, bandana around the face wearing kids doing the shuffle at raves are all into dubstep, d&b, and electro.

You are absolutely insane if you don't think going from All Ages to 18+ is going to affect attendance, when probably half the people in attendance, if not more, are UNDER 18!

Might more 18+ show up now that it's 18+? Sure. Maybe. But that number will be very small versus the number of people who can no longer get in. Supposing they check IDs. And they'd be stupid not to.

Posted by omega1n on Aug-19-2010 18:14:

Not to mention all the people who are of age and can't attend because they're not able to get an ID.

Posted by nima86 on Aug-19-2010 18:24:

all it comes down to is different strokes for different folks. I'd take cox, lawler, digweed over any 3 trance djs in world and im sure others agree and disagree. Thats the beauty of living in socal we have so much variety and options

Good thing you didn't post that video. I turned it off quickly before I began banging my head against the wall incessantly.

Posted by Nerologic on Aug-19-2010 21:10:

Ya I guess you are right. I guess I fail to realize how much of the crowd is under 18. But these fucking days its hard to distinguish a 15 year old from an 18 year old. I guess that blurs my perspective because they all look the same to me. lol

Nocturnals attendance will show how much the 18+ restriction will effect attendance at Massives...

WTF are you doing on this site? GTFO Troll.

Posted by Quazar on Aug-20-2010 00:05:

IIRC, people were taking about the floor emptying out quite a bit after Benassi at EDC, leaving A&B and Armin with a smaller crowd.

To me that just drives home the point that the "kids" love Benassi/Guetta/Deadmau5/Rusko, but could care less about the trance legends.

Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am, but it seems like kids want "hard" EDM, and not the dreamy, emotional style associated with trance.

Either way, MM's lineup this year isn't really for me. That's fine, though, Nocturnal sounds great.

EDIT: I turn 26 next week, so when I say kids, I mean college age and younger. Some of you might think I'm a kid. :P I guess it's all relative.
