Windows tips to minimize the liklihood of being affected:

1) Have windows critical update set to run every day (make sure it runs at a time your computer is actually on)

2) Make sure you have an antivirus program, and update the virus definitions on a regualr basis (at least once a week)

3) Download a software firewall (zonalarm is a very goood free one, but Norton's or McAfee's are also just as good)

4) goto the GRC Website and click on "shields up" make sure you test your shields and probe your ports (its completely safe, dont worry) This will show you the majority of weaknesses in your system. If your ports arent stealthed, tinker with your firewall until they are.

5) Do NOT use MS Outlook. find something else. If you feel you MUST use outlook, make sure you disable the preview feature and NEVER open up any email that has an attachment (unless you are expecting one to be sent)

6) Disable file and printer sharing. That is only needed if others connect to your computer, or a printer directly attached to your computer. You can still access other computers though.

While if you follow these steps you are still not completely safe, you will at least be protected from the easy vulnerabilities that 12 year olds know how to do.

This thread is crackin me up!

Ok, as for the 'disabling preview feature', I cannot find it for the life of me.
Where can I change that setting in Outlook express?

Hey post the IP of whoever tried to HAX0R your GIBS0N. I'm sure atleast one of us knows some things we can do with it.....

I'm assuming. that's all.

The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer (UDP Port 28800) from 24.27.215.63 (UDP Port 28800).

Occurred: 8 times between 7/26/02 4:29:52 AM and 7/26/02 5:02:54 AM

(this is one of the many occurences of this, after rebooting several times it was only a matter of minutes b4 he was going at it again)
-----------------

Port 28800 is a port for most online gaming including MSN ZONE.

Interesting enough these blocked attempts were coming my way while I was not connected to the ZONE or using any zone software. Yet the attempts were still directed at that specific port.

Anyhow, nothing is 100%, but as far as I know this is the one....
I traced his location to a small city just outside Baltimore.
Then varified from someone on the ZONE that in fact that is where he lives....

Please do not do anything with this IP, it is for information purposes only

Cheers,

I would email the ISP (it should tell you in his WHOIS info) and tell them that this IP is trying to hack your comp and they will kick him off the internet.

Why would anyone want to use this POS software anyway?
Another wise advice would be not to use IE, since it is filled with backdoors that are not looking to be patched (it's a core problem).. For instance, I can issue any commands to your computer, while you simply view my page with your IE... It's been almost a year since those holes were discovered, yet even after latestpatches, they work still... Wonder why?

Solution: USE MOZILLA! (http://www.mozilla.org)

Might have been posted already, im just to lazy to read the other posts :P

Even with a firewall, anti-virus, etc, you are still vunerable. Though in order to upload a file, you need to have an open port which allows it. port 139, netbios, is one of the most easiest, and most used way to hack and send data. so closing port 139 might help. tho if it was some kid who threatened you, id ignore it and laugh because chances are they bearly know how to run there own computer. and alota firewall alerts to your comptuer, id ignore unless it says its a NetBIOS or a Telnet attepmt (most used hacking "tools") if ya get there IP use something like...well i forget the name, find out his location and scare him tho if its a kid he probably just downloaded some stupid "hacking tools" he found which 80% of the time are backdoor trojans and virii so they are actually screwing them selves in the end ...well lunch time

Once you have found the i.p of the "hacker" how do you go about doing a whois command on him?
