I usually tell myself to make a good track before anything else. The songs usually tell me what to do, so I can't really dictate where the song goes.

+1 This - Kind of. I always do a breakbeat song. Sometimes I have a more developed song idea which dictates its progression.

Generally i have something in my mind and if i want to make a house track i do it, but i'm pretty sure that a lot of people would consider that it's more trance than house, you can't get rid of your roots :S

Another important thing is the bpm's in practice it doesn't matter if you make your uplifting trance track at 132 bpm or 140, sound very alike , 140 more driving but that's it. The problem is that you can't place an uplifting trance track easily in the middle of a set, the 132 tracks are usually groovy, rythm over melody...

So it's important to think when and where is going to be played, home, club big events... and if you want tech-house dj's to play your tracks don't made them at 138 bpm lol the rest the more creative you are the better.
