He is who he is and I don't think he would be where he is if he couldn't be himself. And I don't think it helps anybody to have to always consider the other people who are trying to make a living off of your back.

Obviously, it's clear to me that people are seeking Joel out to try and use his fame and reach to big up themselves and expand their own music and career. Maybe deadmau5' downfall is that he entertains too many of them.

I mean, $5k for a remix or a licensing deal? These days people should be happy if they get $500 and the check doesn't bounce. Seriously now.

When you're famous, you will always have people who want something from you. And usually you're not able to give them what they want. And when that happens, everything goes south - especially if they claim to be "friends" beforehand.

I feel bad for Orlando that they couldn't work out some kind of agreement regarding the track, but it's also pretty clear that this tiff has given him way more exposure than he would have ever gotten on his own grounds. And obviously he knew that and wouldn't have gone ahead with his own bash track, online rant, etc.

And the bottom line is this - deadmau5 has a huge and loyal following because he does NOT play the game. He is a real person, he talks to his fans, he speaks his mind, he has fun with what he does.

Apparently, Orlando is also not a fan of comments...tons of deletions, which is highly childish.

That's only half the equation though. He's now a big star and he needs to act like a big star. You're famous. You're going to get lots of attention. You have to tune out the haters and keep your mouth shut.

That's a pretty big blanket statement- to say that people only work with him for money and exposure. Maybe they want to work with him for an artistic level?

I disagree here. He posted the rant on Resident Advisor, a web site with a clientele that doesn't care about anything related to deadmau5. I don't think many of Joel's fans would visit the Soundcloud page either (how many of them know what that is?), and on Joel's blog, he didn't reference Orlando's name in his rant. So outside of TA and a couple other places, Orlando is getting no exposure.

I'm convinced the only reason he has a huge following is because of the geek character and mousehead gimmick.

Take that away and his music is very generic. He used to be a good producer on albums like Get Scraped and some of his tracks like "Faxing Berlin" and "Arguru". But ever since "Strobe", his productions have been pretty bland.

He's taking the same route as the Swedish House Mafia: whip out a generic track that sounds like the rest of your stuff, and watch it rise on the Beatport charts. And people think because of that, the artist must be good.

As an entertainer he's doing better than ever now. But as a musician- an artist, he's fallen a lot over the past couple years.

I'm not going to do the individual quoting thing - just because I have a lot of work that I've been putting off all night.

I hear your points. That said, I don't agree with all of them but I hope that's alright.

I don't buy the whole "now that you're famous, act a certain way" rulebook. You're still who you are and you should be able to voice your opinion, especially when people try to drag you into the mud.

I also think that as you get bigger, more people are going to try and claim that they're your friend and try to get something out of you. I'm not saying that everybody who approaches him is out to do that but clearly there are people who have that motivation. Not just for deadmau5 - for anyone who is famous or successful.

I also think that if his fans only cared about a hat and him being a geek, he wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as he is. There's a lot to it - its a whole combination of things that he's managed to pull together.

The first time we played with him, he was opening for James Zabiela in NYC. Now he's a much bigger performer and it's all happened very quickly. If it would be that easy, dont you think more artists would have some kind of gimmick by now?

I just don't know why this guy riles people up so much.

Anyhow I hope my points don't rile you up. I hadn't heard of this whole Orlando/deadmau5 thing until a friend of mine pointed it out to me tonight. lols.

he has a huge following because he wears a mouse head...there is no other reason. Other producers have produced tracks like his well before he came along and since he's been around and many of them have never gone on to this type of fame and showmanship. He had an interesting name and a gimmick that the young kids bought into. He has no artistic integrity and he is simply producing this type of music because he can make money doing it.

That's simply not true. Some of his early releases were massively popular because of their musical quality.

Not that I personally enjoy what he does in any way... but come on.

You can still voice an opinion but you do it in a professional way and not like a whiny little child. Joel needs to mature and having people feeding his already inflated ego does not help him at all.

Deadmau5 is not just Joel anymore...Deadmau5 is now everyone that works for/with Joel to make his shows what they are.

A lot of people on here still believe that the EDM scene is a special scene where everyone has to have some sort of special love for the music. Joel is exactly the opposite....he may like the music and that's what got him into producing but he cares more about making money...which is evident in the fact he produces track after track. He has given up producing quality for quantity.

There are more and more artists with gimmicks nowadays...maybe not mouse heads or other costumes but they have gimmicks. DJs have gone from spinning tracks to putting on entire shows with performers and other crap.

The key is the fact they were his early releases....and guess what....he didn't wear a stupid mouse head when he first started performing. At first people somewhat respected him because he made a couple quality tracks but then he stopped worrying about quality and went for quantity.

So what? Without early respect and sales the gimmick would never have gained traction or perhaps even come into being.

You're not making sense here. I think the furry costume is stupid as well, and I abhor the kind of music I've heard from him, but your comments are off-base.

People like deadmau5 because they have fun at his shows - and that's the truth, ruth. People also have fun at Nascar and Disneyland. Deal with it.

The people that first bought his tracks and somewhat respected him are the ones that now dislike him. When the gimmick came along a new group of people became interested in him and have sparked this craze. The first group of people got him noticed but the second group of people have created the monster. He's always been a bit of an ass and rubbed people the wrong way but now his immaturity is showing.

I don't disagree that he is a good performer and puts on a good show but personally a good show means shit if you produce shit music...unfortunately his new fanbase cares more about the gimmick and show then they do the music.

I don't really care at all...just debating a topic...nothing more.

he was very popular even before he had a mousehead so that's definitely not true.
the reason i still respect him is despite his popularity now he's still that same person he was back when i met him some years ago + he achieved it all on his own with his own productions, nowadays to reach a level that he's at many douchebags like guetta either sample other artists or they have 10 producers working full time for them making "hits" + the creativity of his music, he is definitely not afraid of trying something new once in a while and take some risks, that's why his music does so well. I'm not a big fan of that style or genre in particular but i can appreciate a talent when i see it.

I don't disagree that he is talented but he has moved away from producing quality and now just produces quantity. He doesn't take risks with the stuff he actually releases...he goofs around and puts shit on youtube before any sort of official release.

You are right...he was popular before the mousehead but like I already said a lot of the people that liked him before the mousehead are the ones that dislike him now. Sure there is a core group, especially in toronto, that liked him before and still like him but some of those are just spewing the support local talent crap. The mousehead brought in a new group of people to him...he has now catered to that group.

From the couple of times I've met him....he came off like an ass...and this was before his fame took off. This has just gotten worse since his ego blew up.

I disagree about the quantity, in fact he's very versatile and can do many different genres, i'm not sure if you've heard his free compilation that he let people download many years ago you would change your mind in an instant, it's everything from rock to alternative to chillout. (Deadmau5 - Get Scraped (2006))
Also he's always an ass and has always been, that's the thing, nothing has changed from when i met him then and see him now. If you were asked by every single teenager and a young adult outside that "Hey, are you deadmau5" you would be an ass too as well, especially with your temperament just get's annoying as fuck and i get him.

I believe that's why his argument is "he has moved away from producing quality and now just produces quantity."

i'm sure that has a lot of to do with his touring schedule in the last year or so? he still got it in him, he just needs to stop touring so much and spend more time in the studio. If you read his blog he says that he mostly uses a midi keyboard and a laptop, all his gear is back home untouched because he has no time to go back and forth while on the road.

so he is touring more yet spewing out more tracks then ever before....that just proves my point...he doesn't care about quality because he doesn't have to.

I agree he is talented but he gave that up to persue the green

no...it proves I'm right. If you look pre 2008 when he wasn't touring as much he produced less stuff then 2008 to present.

You said he's "producing more tracks than ever before". Four releases in 2010 proves you wrong.
