yeah time travel in the way that we look at it is not gonna happen. It's not gonna be like in Back to the Future with Doc's flux compacitor or whatever he had.

but if you can shoot particles faster than the speed of light through a certain type of liquid, then in essence, "time travel" has been done.

AGREED. Why shouldn't we tamper with it? What if we were to mess with something that REALLY changed the world and created a "paradox"? What if we were to change 2001-09-11? Answer: We wouldn't know what the terrorists REALLY have in store for us! Or, what if you were to do something that would cause your life to cease existance? Would you just disappear? If so, where would you go?

It would be as if time froze. Travelling faster than the speed of light would permit the perception of going back in time because everything would be seen as occuring in reverse order. But to physically alter something by this method would be impossible, because all we'd be seeing are beams of light.

exactly, and if you would travel faster than the speed of light your body mass would be more than the entire universe and you would shrink smaller than the smallest particle.

sure there is. just fly to a different time zone

Posted by DJ Mikey Mike on Jul-30-2002 23:01:

in theory it is possible. But only if a thing called a "wormhole" exists. You all no what one of those is rite? u see em in startrek and shit, u enter one u travel huge distances of space in seconds.

Rite.. before i start its also important that you know what happens when you travel at speeds greater than the speed of light (like robert has talked about above.) You ever heard the story in physics where, if u sent a rocket from earth at the speed of light, when they return 20 minutes later millions and millions of years on earth will hav gone by. So basically while your travelling at speed of light, everything else in the universe is ageing quicker than you (go read einsteins relativity papers, very interesting stuff)

So.. if u were able to physically catch onto one end of a wormhole with a rocket, and go flying off at the speed of light the this would put the wormhole in a state of temporal flux. With correct calculations u could make it so that entering the wormhole would bring u back tens/thousands/millions/etc. of years into the past

But this all depends on whether the speed of light is possible, and whether wormholes exist which is another debate.

Mike

a wormhole doesnt exist as such.

when approaching the speed of light neither time, lenght or mass remains constant.
imagine you want to travel to andromeda, which is something like 2 million lightyears away.
first of all accelarating to lightspeed. if you have an infinite accelaration you will be at lightspeed instantly. however the human body would find this very unpleasant. let's say you accelarate at 1G (9.81 m/s).
at this rate it will take around a year to reach lightspeed.
offcourse you want to hit the brakes at 1G too, so another year for slowing down.
once you have reached lightspeed the journey will take no more time at all, because at lightspeed the distance will have shrunk to zero.

for the people on earth however 2 million years would have passed.
also try navigating thru the universe when the distance is zero.

Talking

if u was to travel @ the speed of light, ur body would literally melt...
but it would be quite cool to watch someone try to travel @ the speed of light...

if you would travel the speed of light your body mass would increase to infinity and it would also take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate you to the lightspeed.

the energy required to travel light speed isnt infinite. Its a 2 digite number x 10 to the power of 64. In other words more energy than whats on offer in the universe. Scientists are looking for other sources of power such as anti-matter which is beyond my understanding capabilities

There is a greek scientist who has found in theory a way for the crew on a vessle to survive the speed of light and what it involves is the actual spaceship not moving, but the space around them moving. To use a more sci-fi word, the ship would be inside a kind of "warp-bubble" whilst the space around it moves at the speed of light and greater.

Posted by Robert on Jul-31-2002 00:23:

you cant say how much energy you need to move an object with an infinite mass.

It simply cannot happen....why.....well

2nd law of thermodynamics basically states.....time always moves forward..in order for time travel to work...it would have to side step the law. THat has not happens and it also states that the world is winding down.....going from order to disorder....wonderful law really...and it has not been proven wrong since it was theoried.

yes but laws are always being upadated, improved, or disproved. Happenes all the time. Thats the wonder of science.

Posted by Ray_Finkle on Jul-31-2002 07:03:

It's funny. What is time?

Try to come up with a all-encompassing definition of 'time'. It's tricky

Also, since I see we have a few physics TAs here, one of my fav topics is the origins of the universe.

Discuss because I am going to bed.

the word time travel is not really correct. it's not as if time itself is being changed, but if a person could travel at lightspeed his time would move at a different rate than a person who is not travelling at lightspeed. read the other post i posted about travelling to andromeda.

Posted by Dave_Masters on Jul-31-2002 09:33:

Tenchnology will progress to massive degrees. But timetraveling is impossible. It just cannot be done.

DaveC is right....even tho....it would be kinda fun to go back to great dj sets you were at and relive them.

British Aerospace are currently testing an Anti - Gravity device which cuts out the whole taking a year to slow down shit....which means we fold space, and travel through. A scientist in russia said he had proof that he can and was doing it on a regular basis, and yesterday BA confirmed they are testing the technology...which is nice

Maybe the time travel will not be done using some kind of machine going at lightspeed... Maybe it would be done using our own brain! There are some ppl who got some perceptions of the future... Have you ever seen something in a dream that happened days / months / years after this dream? Maybe it's a kind of time travel...

= Now I'm totally confused =

A few things to think about here :

Ok so you can time travel ! how the fuck are you gonna get back for your sunday tea.

One your gonna be the most popular guy in the world but , guess what you aint there to see the people.

If you could time travel some activest is gonna kill you, sadam is gonna nuke you and the cops are gonna bust ya arse.

Are you gonna have the balls , the chance you life , your family just to try time travel.

you have just travelled back in time , but you can't get back and your gonna get pissed off coz all you have is dinasours to talk to .

if time traveled forward , your gonna be dead, coz you live to 80 max right if ya lucky, in time travel your gonna have to travel in light years, physically impossbile as your body will prob explode.

what happens when you go past Before Christ your gonna end in fukin hell, coz christ aint there.

if you go past the future you gonna end up in Microsoft land. !!

Only way it might exist if aliens exist do they ?

Posted by cammie on Aug-01-2002 22:18:

I personally don't think it's possible but these guys certainly hope that a lot of people believe it. http://www.timetravelfund.com/

im very surprised no one has mentioned the most famous reason time travel cant be possible, the "grandfather paradox". wot if u were to go back in time and kill ur grandfather as a child, before ur father/mother was concieved? u wud never have been born, therefore u wudnt have been able to travel back and kill ur grand dad. also, i believe that time itself doesnt actually go forward, but we are the ones travelling, so u cant go back through something that isnt linear, or something, that sounded much better in my head! read the michael crichton book "timeline" for the theories behind the paralell universe type of travelling, all to do with quantum foam etc. very interesting stuff!

Posted by DJ Chrono on Aug-02-2002 01:19:

i guess time travel will be possible only to go forward in time.. i think its pretty impossible to go backwards into the past.. but to go forward into the future is very plausible. we do it every day.

i beleive sceientists have therorized that you cant go back to a period before the machine was created, so you wouldnt have to worry about you killing ur grandfather but you grandson killing you

hope that sheds some light on the subject

if you could go beyond lightspeed you could..
