listen, i don't want to argue either, and i know how americans are "typically" viewed by other people, especially over seas. but do you now think that i look favorably at canadians, especially if they all come across like you do? just because you have had negative experiences here, doesn't mean you can label the country as a whole. and if other people are quick to be stereotypical, that means it's ok for you too? i guess i'm starting to sound like i'm arguing

Foreigners ever stop and think maybe we don't understand why they don't like us? Well, actually we do understand....its pretty obvious what their problem is when they start knocking on us.

I am pretty much neutral with everyone. I love Europe, I love their lifestyle, I have a part of Europe in my blood. I also love the oppurtunities we have in this country... So I am definitely neutral to both sides.

But for all you foreigners that dislike us, thats fine. You can knock our country all you want, we basically dont give a shit lol. 1000s, and 1000s, of immigrants still flock to this country, every day, every year...That really says something.

Lets face it, if a war ever broke out, we can both pretty much figure out who's going to cry to who. Sound arrogant? Damn right it sounds arrogant. Our tax dollars we pay, every single day, have built and provided one of the most powerful militarys in the world and also help provide a stable financial government. Without us, our country is useless. Naturally, if you were in the same position, you would contain some level of pride in your country as well, as far as financial and military issues go. Sure, some people proceed to be a bit excessive in their "arrogance" as you say, but thats only natural, and is a problem every country has. But please, don't generalize all of us simply because you had a bad personal experience.

As far as Canadians, well, they say we are arrogant, cocky, or whatever, and we say, well.....we don't say anything, we just dont give a damn lol.......

I'd move, but it would absolutely kill my parents. Seroiusly tho, I would really like to get out of here one of these days. Netherlands souds really nice. I listen to ID-T almost every hour that I'm awake. If I could just figure out what them people are saying. Its almost illegal to have fun here unless everyone else is having fun the same way, that really pisses me off. I've noticed that nobody around here has an open mind, almost to the point where they are much like sheep or lemmings or something. I sure don't feel as free as they say I am these days. But If I moved somewhere else, I dunno If I would be able to be successfull since I've been rised here. Damn, i jsut looked back on this post and realized that is really doesnt make very much sense, but I think im gonna post it anyway.

You can move to Brazil: it's sunny and there's a good trance scene (with everything else that comes from it) - well, drum'n'bass is more popular actually

If you're American and you're reading this post, you might have understood that almost everybody outside your country is complaining about it: stop thinking that we've got some invy and try to do something about it! For your sake, I wont even compare the contributions and the overall public benefit the United States has provided to the world, compared to the contributions of Brazil.

thats right, thats why you're arguing SO passionately about this subject here on this board. :P Obviously you do give a damn, otherwise you wouldn't have posted. And who says Canada wants to be in the spotlight? Not everyone is a attention-hungry fame seeker. :P

I'd like to interject in this discussion, because I certainly have a few things to say.

I've been living in the USA for about 10 years. There are a lot of good things about this country, and there are some real problems, too. Where this country really shines, is the opportunities it gives you to achieve your dreams and enjoy a high standard of living. For instance, anyone who wants to be rich and prosperous, really can be. Anyone can get a great education, there is religious and ethnic/racial tolerance (think of how diverse the American population is), and nothing stops you from becoming successful. The economic opportunities are great. And just an example: I know of no other country where having an accent doesn't surprise anyone, and is perfectly accepted in society. At the place where I work, there are people from China, Turkey, India, England... The standard of living here is one of the highest: e.g., food is much cheaper than in Canada and Europe, and people can buy a lot more -- a LOT more -- for their money. (A quick but relevant example: turntables are a lot cheaper here than in the UK, as I've found out.) People are also very friendly -- but there's a reason for that, as I'll explain later. Read on.

Now we come to the bad things:
1 - Conservative Puritanism. The American culture is very conservative, and ridiculously strict when it comes to matters of alcohol, sex, nudity, drugs, and anything "objectionable." There is a very powerful Christian Conservative party here, and the country was founded on the Puritan ethic. Examples: Ruthless and unreasonably strict censorship of TV (no nudity ever allowed) and even the Internet (this is being discussed now); the drinking and clubbing age is 21; there is a curfew for teenagers in many places; Colin Powell got reprimanded for talking with youngsters about condoms; and, of course, the infamous "drug war"... with raids, criminal punishment, and "Just Say No!" lessons in school. (Of course, everyone I've ever known has said "yes". Not to mention -- the average age when people lose their virginity here is 16. Funny how two extremes come together.)

2 - Violence. It's dangerous to go to the central parts of cities ("downtown") at night. There are many criminals, bums, etc. You can get killed easily. But this is related to the fact that people can freely own guns here. And in general, the friendly character of the people has been historically linked to gun ownership: When everyone has a gun, there's no choice but to be friendly.

3 - Foreign Policy. Nothing much to say here, I think it should be a little more globalistic and open. In the South, for instance, they have a special party that advocates America's "national sovereignty" -- that no one has the right to stop America.I think this is silly.

So there you have it -- good and bad. If a lot of people are immigrating here, surely that says some good things about life here.

Aw man, Vancouver's the perfect place for you! Hottest in the summer is probably 25-27C with no humidity. Absolute coldest in winter is -10C with no wind chill Tonnes of mountains, Whistler is just an hour away. Lots of other local mountains which gets a lot of snow. And did i mention Whistler? Its AWESOME!

haha and no sun half of the year... always raining and cloudy. Its a nice city with the warmest weather all year around (in Canada). Though, it does have its hard drugs problems and ghettos...

Yes, The U.S. is very mutli-cultural. However, there is still alot of hate and prejudice that goes on. Not saying that it doesn't in other countries, but I think comparatively from my own experience, it is worse in the states than in Canada. I guess it has to do with people getting mad at immigrants coming to "their" country and stealing their jobs and creating ghettos, etc. etc. And in some area's its not very multicultural at all. In teh summer, here I live in a predominantely 'white' town. People here understand me no problem. Last summer, i tried out this telemarketing job where I had to call people in the states. I was calling people in Alabama, and for some reason, they couldn't understand me because I have a "thick accent"
first time anyone's ever told me that. :P

Which brings me to another observation, there is a very big spectrum in the general population of the U.S. in terms of household income. You got the super-rich, like Bill Gates, Donald Trump, etc. and then you got people living off welfare cheques and food stamps. I know, I spent 2 weeks living in the Bronx with my uncle.

However, I've had good experiences in America too. Disney World, whee!, great beaches in Florida. Big corporations providing me with things I probably use daily, tv shows, jerry springer lol, hollywood movies, and so forth.

So, I there's good and bad. I have no hate for the country, except I think its citizens over-react to criticism. Most of them can't seem to handle it when someone points out the faults of their 'perfect society' and they have to resort to name calling and the old "my country is better than yours because we have this and you don't yadda yadda yadda," which only helps proves the point of the critic. The critics aren't talking out of their asses, they say what they say from experience.

Agreed about the rain Actually the drugs is all in the downtown east side. Hastings street alone makes Vancouver have one of the highest crime rates in North America, I hear. If you stay off the east part of Hastings, then its a pretty safe place to live.

I have absolutely NOTHING against Canadians, but Canadians that have this "grudge" towards the U.S., I do. But, in all honesty, we really don't care. To me, and millions of others, and our schools, Canada is just "there".......

We aren't looking for pride, joy or credit. Its like you are blaming us for holding all the North American spot lights in general. The economic spotlight, the entertainment spotlight, etc.etc.....I mean is it really our fault? Do you think I sit down, watch tv, and eat up all this bullshit that this country spits out? No, I never said we are the best, but we definitely aren't the worst.

I believe the history in general tells a lot, about this grudge between the French/British Canadians, and the United States......I don't wanna get mean, its pretty uncalled for, but making accusations you can't back up, or honestly, out of pure jealousy, is just ridiculous. Cuz that is exactly what you guys posting sound like. A bunch of Canadians pissed off cuz we run the show on this continent.

The US is screwing the whole planet as we know it? Do you really believe that? Is that what they are teaching you in school now?

Do you know who you're #1 economic partner is? Do know what Canada would be like RIGHT NOW if we didn't exhist? Funny how Canada didn't want to tighten their border security after the terrorist attacks, until we threatened to stop the 2 billion dollars of trade that exhist. Ofcourse, Canada took the threat seriously, and tightened their border security immediately. Kinda shows who's in power eh?

You know what I want to hear from Canadians, just say it, "Canada would be better WITHOUT the United States", can you say that?I bet you can't! So stop bitchin!
