a weekly is a different matter but I think people will follow the dj talent there if its good enough. i can't imagine anyone on TA saying they'd skip seeing DJ XXX in downtown because its there instead of in Hollyowood.

Exactly people will go to see the talent wherever it is.

I hope this club does well I've been in there almost everyday for the past 2 years I don't have anything but time invested in the venue which is absolutely gorgeous. I really mean it the venue is amazing everyone should go there at least once!

If anyone is in downtown anytime soon hit me up they're pretty cool with me walking people through there

Whats everyones opinion on events taking place in downtown LA? Can it be successful?

Stock Exchange in mid 90's was bomb even though the music was
trash. It escalated the casual/jeans tshit vibe into a more upscale ambiance. The only negative I can recall on the venue was a severe restroom shortage.
Oh ya.. and parking was a bitch.

I think San Diego can give a little insight. IMO.

Spin, which is not in downtown is where Giant went. It did okay at first, but over time it started to fizzle away because everyone kept on going to downtown because of many more choices/convenient factor.

In this case downtown SD = hollywood and Spin/Exch are elsewhere.

Spin had to figure out the hard way. Just because it's not in downtown, it's going to suffer a big hit crowd wise. And over time it will go under if it stays strictly EDM.

Now, they do Latin night and Gay nights etc. Not much EDM at Spin anymore, if any.

ugliest bunch of clubbers i've seen and the pictures are terrible too.

LOL!!! its cuz the promo companies that throw it usually cater to the asian crowd, unfortunately most of them are fobby.

other than that, the venue is dope!

One of the negative things about the layout is that the DJ booth is so far away from the dance floor. It's like when Avalon has the DJ on the 2nd floor balcony sometimes. When you are on the dance floor at the Exchange it's just kind of weird because you feel like you are just listening to a CD player or something because the DJ is so high up and you don't really see anything if you are looking straight ahead. They might have changed the layout but from the pictures it looks the same as when I went there earlier in the year for some house music night.

I get what you're saying.
It felt like being on the bottom tier of a cruise ship with the music on deck. I do recall a nice (but small) VIP area with pretty cool bar. Is it still there?

I'm not sure. I just stayed on the lower deck

I think so, unless they moved it.

DJ booth is on the second floor overlooking the main floor. The booth placement is not optimal but now they have a giant LED wall in front of it so there's no way to put it at crowd level or, below the LED wall I don't think. My advice to them before they bought the wall was to move the booth on the floor or drop it down like 5 feet but that didn't happen. When I DJ'ed there it wasn't the most intimate feeling all the way up there. Fill it with people that wanna hear good music and I think the vibe would still be there though.

The booth sits directly above the LED wall

That space up top used to be a room overlooking the main room but now is boarded up with a doorway that leads to some hallways that run through the space. You can walk out onto a small balcony there but not much room.

Opposite end you have the like super VIP or green room, cocaine room LOL whatever you wanna call it. Not boarded up. (Older picture)

It has 1 booth in it and it's the largest VIP booth I have ever seen. Like 14 feel long orgy leather couch that they had to pull it up from the outside of that window. I don't have a pic of that. Red lighting and a private bar in the room.

Sound system is funktion 1 and it's on point in that main room. They recently added a second bar opposite the other to make double the money and that was a good decision for them. Opened the space up some too with bar crowd being on both sides. Middle is dancefloor not alot of traffic.

The movie the social network, that nightclub scene when Timberlake says I'm CEO bitch that was filmed there http://www.vodkaster.com/Films/The-Social-Network/21292

hmmm.... that's actually how LIV in Miami Beach has their setup.... though the main entrance to the club is down the stairs that go right in front of the dj booth...

Eh, I never hear good things from DJs about booths seperated from the floor. That could be a turnoff for big EDM promoters who would be interested in doing a weekly. It certainly wouldn't be pleasing to the big DJs.

Remember when Ice originally opened and its booth was way up in the corner. They later built a booth on the floor and it made the place completely different.

Posted by kevin shawn on Oct-31-2010 22:07:

Yea the vibe completely changed at ICE when that booth was moved to ground level. What a good booth that was and it was super simple. 3 panels make up the entire wall and it's on wheels so moving it is an option if they hear enough feedback to re-position the booth maybe they'd do it.

I told them the first time I saw the venue move that booth down to the floor it's better for EDM events where people come to see the talent. That staircase and the LED wall used to not be there it was actually no stairs in front, they were hidden in the rear kinda under the second floor. They had a stage setup that would've worked had they put some tress up and some lights.

Another suggestion I gave them was to hang some screens for visuals above the booth on both sides of that empty black space, they already have the projectors up there just no screens. The booth has like zero lighting and to me, as a DJ I like to see nice DJ booths

that explains. i was surprised by your comment.

if you think this crowd is ugly, you will find la trance crowd nasty. that's why people are not coming. it is not like people are not into music.

I think people will go downtown if it's a good event. Look at what has happened to the Art Walk - every month, something like 20K people turn up. Obviously different - it's free - but people DO show up. Lot's of people live downtown now compared to 10 years ago.

Regarding the dj booth location, being so high up is a problem. Maybe the beauty of the room will outweigh that, but I doubt it. Peeps these days LOVE to worship the dj. Personality cult much of the time. You can't just ignore that.

I went last night it is a really nice "Vegas Like" club. Bouncers were dicks. Sound was great. Bathroom situation was terrible. Lighting is real nice. All in all I would rate it about a 7 out of 10.

Posted by bigperf on Nov-02-2010 17:16:

looks like a weekly.
VC 11/18
behrouz 12/10
glaude 12/17

credit for friday night option, though not on the level of talent as saturday nights.

Posted by AlokGT on Nov-02-2010 18:10:

Why are people skeptic about DT parties? Ever been to Digweed at the Mayan? Where there's good talent, there will be at minimum the house heads + washing machines.

Posted by pnutttty on Nov-02-2010 18:28:

ive been to a few downtown warehouse parties in the past couple months...and all have been PACKED. but then again, the househeads are a dedicated bunch.

Unimpressive to be honest. Behrouz is dope, Glaude is a always a good time. Calderone should be a decent starter show but from what the venue told me they wanted big talent there.

Everyone has been asking for PVD at a nightclub and that's who I told them should have for a grand opening 6 months ago but, easier said than done in LA with the competition being what it is.

Saturday's are still open I hope they step their game up.

The movie was very good Very interesting story.

According to another flyer the they're bringing out Serge Devant, Mark Farina, Cerdric Gervais, Jonathan Peters and George Acosta. Decent start I hope they establish a quality name for themselves as a venue.

I heard that Mark Lewis was going to be doing some stuff there as well that flyer confirms that. I love his older Interstate stuff.
