On one hand, this is unfair to other Mormons, as I doubt Wiener is anything like that; On the other, to imagine someone should behave differently because of an unconnected trait is unfair to those who don't share that same characteristic (or, in this case, the same belief) - would you expect me to be more loving if I were a Christian?

I hope not, because I'd be downright annoying

I was confused by the title of this thread, and even more confused with the video title in relevance to being a Mormon. It's as if Mormon's aren't allowed to make mistakes lol, no one is perfect in my eyes, It's like recording someone who is a "Catholic" or "Jewish" or "Buddist" or "Muslim" doing some bad thing and therefore use that against them or prove something to the world with that. .. Irrelevant? I think so.

As to her way of punishing, interesting, how old is the kid again?.. that's a mean mom, but I remember i got it worst when I was a little jit lol.. and that is NO hot sauce, use Habanero and then we are talking

I agree completely, but this isn't some sort of diatribe against Mormons. It's not like if this were some Irish-Catholic doing this, that I'm trying to trash all Irish-Catholics. I suppose they added the tagline for reasons that her Mormon beliefs should come as an illustration to the moral standard she is required to uphold due to her own religion versus her actions.

I went to a cult-like Christian school, judging by their behavior to anyone who didn't act the way they thought you should this doesn't surprise me.

Which makes me wonder what he meant by "I was playing with someone else".

And, yeah, I've been punished the hardest in this life by people who didn't really appreciate me going against their (religious) beliefs.

So much for love and compassion...

Nah, I don't think anything you did/said/posted was aimed against Mormons. I imagine you just didn't give it much thought, and I figured I'd draw your attention to this

I genuinely believe that parents should be forced to go to a parenting class before having children. People do not know how to properly discipline their children, and it results in violent, vengeful, angry and messed up kids. Then they pass on the terrible parenting to their kids.

Super Nanny is a great show to illustrate how children should be disciplined. Violence is not necessary at all. Consistency, and clarity is the key to getting good behaviour from children.

If she really wanted to punish him...

she would make him watch as she shaves her twat

lol at the mormon tag line.. it is pretty irrelevant. Mormons make just as many mistakes or "sins" as everyone else.. I'm pretty sure i wasn't supposed to drink as much coffee as i did today, or enjoy that glass of wine. oops.

anyway, seeing as i have 2 kids.. i can honestly say this is bullshit. I have never laid a hand on my 4 yr old and either has eli.. i don't plan on it in the future either, there are other methods of getting your point across.. shit like this (which i would consider abuse) is pretty pointless. My brother was an EXTREMELY troubled kid. My parents adopted him when he was 2 and had been shuffled around the system 10 times, therefore never connecting to anyone, and never really been nurtured. he has FAS and ADD etc.. he was one crazy ass kid, throwing knifes, starting fires etc. and my parents didn't have to resort to discipline like this, so what excuse does this person have? It breaks my heart kids have to go through stuff like this. maybe it explains some of society's fuck ups.

Its a distressingly sadistic means of punishment on a little kid who would be 6 or 7 at most and little kids aren't the same as adults when it comes to understanding the consequences of what they do a lot of the time. What a rubbish parent.

A lack of computer games, TV and deserts would probably have a lot more impact.

Posted by Intellekshual on Nov-30-2010 07:50:

That was really painful to watch...

Discipline that involves pain is the short-answer, quick-fix solution.
You don't need to resort to this type of abuse to teach kids how to behave, and if you are firm enough with kids from an early age, and teach them that there are limits to everything, then you should be ok.

I can't see how the humiliation of what is basically physical abuse is supposed to teach anyone anything..

My parents (especially my mom) beat me until I was in my twenties - I didn't enjoy it, the only thing which beating did to me was allow me to refine my plans to avoid it, and made damn sure that whatever I was doing just before I got hit, I would never be caught doing again.
That didn't stop me from doing it, though.

You got beat until you were in your twenties? Thats actually really fucked up...not on your panrets side but on yours. Im not saying fight them back but as some point during the mid to late teens one should learn how to dodge or divert the punches.

Doesnt work on every kid this. I didnt like sweets when i was young (still dont), preferred books to tv and when my parents took away my video game discs i responded by learning how to code my own games At least they saw that as time well spent i guess

Was wondering the same thing.

Not saying the thread title is trying to make a malicious statement about all Mormons, but I don't understand why videos with titles like this exist. Are people trying to make blanket statement about large groups of people based on one member making a mistake? The world is full people people like this woman who do stupid things.

And who says I haven't?.. the most they got away with after I turned 16 - 17 was a slap in the face/ kick in the butt, then I stop them. My dad hasn't hit me in a decade and my mom gave up after I got too strong, too tall for her to handle.

After every beat down, though, my mom would come to me crying and apologizing profusely. They both confessed to me a couple years ago that they should've never laid a finger on me, that it was wrong, and that they're sorry. I forgive them, of course. But I never understood it.

I don't really think negative enforcement is that bad of an idea on kids: At least to an extent.

the airy fairy parenting of today is as silly as the psychotic violence and neglect that used to happen. As everyone said, kids aren't capable of rationalising their behaviour in some cases... i watched a tiny bit of the video, and he knew he did something wrong, and then lied about it, do you let it go there?

kids learn their behaviour from the parents (obivously)- this kid knew he was bad, and deserved to be repremanded (in the parents eye anyway), they understand physical denouncements on every level, is it really that bad? It works on animals.

I guess its a case of context, but i really don't think physical punishment is a bad idea for kids at all times. I think the super-liberal parents have raised the bunch of ****s who are now ruining the cities who think they're invincible, omnipotent super-men, when they're really dickheads who never got corrected when they were bad as kids, and so have no concept of right and wrong.

coming from someone without much experience with kids (no doubt obviously )

There are much more consistent, rational and reasonable punishments than making the kid eat hot sauce and freezing him in a shower while loudly berating him for 3 minutes straight. An episode like that can be extremely psychologically traumatizing to a child.

That said, I don't find the punishment in the video to be extremely "abusive", and we don't get to see the video of later on, when mommy reminds the kid that she loves him very much, and hates acting like a troll, and tucks him into bed and reads him a story from the Mormon Bible to put his mind at ease as he drifts off to sleep.

Haha indeed- I get the psychological effect, and I dont want to condone abuse, but isnt that the whole point of punishment, to an extent?

n January 2006, an Australian man suffered a stroke as a result of diazepam abuse while on holiday in Thailand. When he awoke his friends noticed he spoke with a mixture of Irish and American accents, sometimes swapping between the two mid sentence. This was the first recorded example of dual foreign accent syndrome.

Hoh.

quote:
A further case of foreign accent syndrome occurred to Linda Walker, a 60-year-old woman from the Newcastle area of UK. Again following a stroke her normal Geordie accent was transformed and has been variously described as resembling a Jamaican, as well as a French Canadian, Italian and a Slovak accent

FAO: Lira, please elaborate what speech like this would sound like. A rough demonstration is enough.

If you need to use corporal punishment to teach your kids a lesson, you're doing it wrong.

There's plenty of research that shows it isn't necessary, and that it has negative effects later in life. There are other parenting/discipline techniques that are far more effective.
