FIFA is fucked, they definitely have their own agenda or as you said some back-door dealings were going on. England eliminated on the first ballot? Give me a break.

The Telegraph:

I wonder how much richer the Fifa elite now are after awarding it to Russia. They must be feeling very smug indeed. The obvious choice for Blatter and his pack of thieves. A nation run by oligarchs and organised crime where journalists that tell the truth are beaten to death and democracy died a death almost a generation ago.

It is interesting that they were prepared to look past the mafia type society, the appalling racism and corruption both of which is endemic in Russian society due to the supposed benefits.

No need for Putin to show up, he knew the result in advance, having organised his mafia pals to pay of fifa.

PS, it was nice surprise to hear so many good words about Russia in this thread

I/we get it, you're a feminist. Cool, but quit trolling your fkn agenda into every discussion, ALL THE TIME.

Don't mean to be a fkn asshole about it, but it's getting to me. Let's leave this thread to the topic of Futbol & FIFA.

That being said, to overlook Spain-Portugal's bid? England's bid? Japan? I'm sure $$ had to have exchanged hands for this decision to be made. What has Qatar contributed to football in the last....forever years?

She's like that because of the fact that she's a lesbian and we all know that lesbians are miserable. A lot of them hate on men and think they are superior to them. I wouldn't worry about it dude.

This applies to you to. No disrespect to Sarah or anyone, just try keeping a thread on topic for once ffs ppl.

Now, as sure as I am that some sort of monetary 'cohesion' may have been involved with most bids, I'm not opposed to Russia winning because they've been a major Sports powerhouse for a long time & I think with the Olympics going there, it's their time right now. Qatar on the other hand??? Ridiculous. Makes no sense whatsoever.

oooh russian olympics or russian world cup? i want to go!

I am sure Putin and his mafia goons are going to make as much of a killing as those who voted for Russia (see recent Wikileaks release citing US government assessment). Given this corruption and level of criminality, together with the amount of overt and violent racism that pervades football ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11879346 ) and certain aspects of society, Fifa are taking risks in choosing Russia and Qatar (risky for different reasons).

I would like to think that some logic was employed in the ballot, and that the two countries were chosen precisely because there is so much untapped potential there (in Qatar's case, the wider Middle East is under-represented in footballing terms), as part of Fifa's remit is to leave a legacy. Additionally, since both countries are still developing societies (slightly 'backward', if you want to use a pejorative & negative term), bringing such a big spectacle to their shores will also help in broadening the residents' horizons, and encouraging them to become world citizens. If you constantly play it safe by targeting the big sporting nations (Australia), and countries that have hosted the tournament before (US, Japan, England and Spain), it could be argued that the game will not grow as much. Since it is a competitive field, and as there are so many sports out there that vying for the attention of aspiring athletes, Fifa might be thinking that it is vital to expand their market share.

Russia's win was expected, while Qatar was certainly a shocker. I thought it should have been Australia or USA. Oh well.

I am already booked for visiting my birthtown/hometown Sochi for 2014 Winter Olympics (beautiful city), and I will also be at these 2018 games, FOR SURE!

Considering recent Wikileaks data branding Russia as "mafia state", it is not a surprise. Putin actually clearly stated that FIFA officials are "victims of smear campaign", and cleverly played the political card by not showing up to "exercise pressure" on the decision.

Panorama is a respected show. Its obvious that FIFA isn't clean, the way the voting system goes and all the back-door voting / deals happening, come on ... They just shoved the whole controversy thing under the carpet, that shows a lot.

dude. whoa. you really think she comes off as a feminist. It's a fucking valid question. Like Canada would have been a better choice than Qatar. Qatar hasn't even qualified in the entire history of the world cup. You will not see hot Brazilian Bitches in the crowds in Qatar. They will be stoned.

This would've been a legit question or post.

Besides, she could care less what I have to say anyways. I'm sure she's not losing any sleep over it.

I agree though Marg, Canada, Japan, anywhere really would've been a better choice. Hell, even another Muslim state/country might've been better. one that has actually qualified & done something in the past World Cups. Why award them? It's stupid. Makes no sense whatsoever.

edit: you know what fuck Skippy's feminist fears with Qatar. I'm going to see what Local forums will trade us 2 goats and 40 rupees for skipper.

FIFA really fucked up on Qatar bid win. Just read into it. There are so many questionable factors, apart from 40-50 C heat during the event, lack of places for football fans to go. Qatar is a very small country, smallest yet to win World Cup. With 1.7 million people, this event is expected to draw over 400,000 tourists. Do we really expect them to be so accommodating? They haven't made any promises with regards to tourists and loosening restricts for the duration of the event.

FIFA is known to value money as its bottom line (South Africa World Cup, read into it) and I know Clinton didn't fill FIFA officials' pockets with thick stacks of money. He and Obama and others lack the influence and power that Putin has, when it comes to getting what he wants. So far, in the world of sports venue wins, Putin is 3-for-3 (2014 Winter Olympics, 2018 World Cup, Formula One ads a race to Russia). In Russia Putin has a reputation for getting things done. Everyone I knew were 100% confident this bid was in the bag, thats why Putin didnt even travel to Switzerland to influence the bid - but UK PM Cameron did, and failed.

Thats why England and Australia lost too, rather quickly and easily, first round knockout. You can't use transparency, words, honesty to win a bid in an organization which is known for corruption and back-door dealings.

lol that's debatable... but I do think you're bang on w/ everything else you said, of course shady shit is going on...

it only adds to the football mystique imo, the drama in football is relentless and honestly 90% of why I love it !!

I'm sure that $$$ was exchanged, but does anyone truly believe that no one was bought off for WC 94??? Or any other WC or Olympics??
So the exchange of $$$ argument falls off as irrelevant imo

You're all forgetting that this isn't just a bid for Qatar, but for the entire middle east...just as this yr's wasnt only for S.Africa, but the WHOLE of Africa...

Couple that with the fact that it's NEVER been in the middle east before (just like it's never been in Africa til now) and there's clearly a large sentiment to go to every continent and all corners of the world.
With it going to Qatar, the WC has officially been EVERYWHERE..or at least in every contintent sans Aussie.
But even they are now part of the Asian Football Federation (ghey but true)

Malek asked what will they do with all those stadiums :
"Presenters also promised to dismantle the stadiums built for the tournament and give them to needy countries."

Also :
"On behalf of millions of people living in the Middle East, thank you," Qatar bid chair Sheikh Mohammad bin Hamad Al-Thani said.
---> Middle East, not Qatar
Don't we rememeber Africans cheering for ANY and ALL African teams when they played and not just their own nation??

I'm not saying i'm in full support of Qatar winning, but it does have some valid arguments
