to answer the question, i'm not sure but some of those in the driver's seat are leading us toward the proverbial cliff. i agree with andrew about emotion though, to me good music regardless of genre evokes emotion and tells some type of story. there are lots of tracks i like but few that produce a strong feeling beyond the "oh this is fun."

oh and what Del said, everyone plays the same stuff

hey guys, next time just use the search function and lookup "trance is dead". It'll save you a lot of time and a lot of typing.

Not to beat a dead horse or be shamefully promotional, but I hope all of you guys check out my album in April. Based on the comments here, I think you'll all find it REALLY interesting, especially considering it's coming out on Armada. I'm pretty much in agreement with everything that was said here; these are all things I've been keeping in mind while writing my album, and it's been an exciting ride, almost finished.. It's extremely different than any of the other albums on the label, hopefully for the better. But I'll wait and see if the general public agrees with me!

If it means anything Marcello, I think that you're productions are the only ones that still really catch my ear and make me thing "how the hell did he do that". Can't wait for the album bro. Keep up that forward thinking original work. Can never get enough.

It's not so much of a question of where trance is going as to what it has evolved into; and I agree to the comment stated above, the top uplifting trance djs out there are sticking to the same basic formula within their sets. I have been heavily unimpressed with the "trance" acts coming to ny over the years, Cosmic Gate has been dwindling down, not to mention their latest album ugh... and Nic Chagall's production have become increasingly blah (what you need is his last solid production.) But as a producer/DJ thats something I'm constantly fighting for is to make every set or track an entirely different experience, making sure not re-hash anything and keep things fresh; easier said than done lol.

With an ever expanding electronic dance music universe, I've come to realize (for a while) there are people out there taking their music,productions,sets much further than the comfort zone they're used to. (i.e. Stimming and the whole Diynamic Label, the Wolf & Lamb crew including Nicolas Jaar, Drumcode, Ozgur Can etc etc.)

I would LOVE to see a Moonbeam come here to NY, not only do they produce a melange of melodic minimal techno but their live sets look mind-blowing, thats where I see the future of this melodic genre.

(PS: You guys should check out Carl Craig, Moritz von Oswald, and Francesco Tristano @ Poisson Rouge on Jan 21st.)

+1... I dont know what it was, but trance has been fading away. I still always have a great time at trance shows, yet do not listen to it as much as usual. Now it is more house, like Victor Calderone and Chriss Vargas. I do miss trance though. My best house music event that I went to was still not as good as my worst trance night.

I agree on that. Its fading away. I will still listen to the older/classic, but new stuff doesnt catch my attention at all. This is not directed towards specific producers, its just a general opinion. Obviously there are some talented producers out there *ahem eco* that don't give in to the recipe of trance and will go above and beyond to try to be original.

I rather put on prog/tech/tech house station rather than trance. I dont know what it is. I rather download drumcode than lets say asot...

The fading away feeling is unexplainable.

trance is going down the commercial route.. and its not good.. its all about hard kicks running basses, ; uplifting melodies and 140bpm.

as a trance dj i still find there is a lot of trance that is really good out there,you just have to look for it ive gotten away from labeling myself a trance dj though because i play so many genres in my sets i didnt want people to think i just played trance.

i became more about the beat and less about the sound a long time ago when the record stores around here refused to carry trance music.it forced me to look at other genres and incorporate their sounds into my mixes.

and i agree i cant stand how the clubs are embracing music with a slower beat.

the club i go to has really gottten away from the trance djs in favor of progressive and slower beat djs.these djs dont attract any more of a crowd then the trance acts they were getting in but because its supposed to be "the trend" of getting progressive and house djs in thats what they get.

notice a few people say how they have transitioned away from trance to house music.house music is horrible to me and always has been.i like a faster beat to my music,138 to 145 bpm is what i enjoy the most.

however i still look at all kinds of new music that comes out to see if i can fit something unique into my sets.if it sounds good to me and i can mix it in its getting played.i make it a point to play other genres most trance djs would refuse to incoporate in a set.prog,psy,techno,hard house,electro,house,everything gets played in my sets if i like it.ill find a way to make it work.

and dont forget the amateur producers and the mashup artists! some of their stuff is incredible and its FREE! you can find a ton of great stuff right here on tranceaddict in the producers forum.


im always on the lookout for great sounding music.new york tranceaddict producers are putting out some great sounds by the way as well.and locals here are also.ill list some more recent trance to come out that i really enjoy in a bit.

keep looking for great music! there is still a lot of great trance coming out week after week!!

Why is everyone acting like this is some new revelation

People have been asking this question for years and time and time again it's the same answer as always the same. (minus the few promising producers left in the scene)

I'm done pondering where it's going. I just listen and enjoy the tracks that I feel are worthy of my time.

Why are some of you looking like the state of trance today (lol) is some sort of shock? We knew this was coming moment EDM became more popular with mainstream crowd. More pop trance. More ASOT/Anjuna. Less innovative stuff, because that stuff rarely sells.

It's no surprising that guys like SvD, Gareth Emery, Giuseppi Ottaviani abandoned the sound that made them make their mark on the trance scene and play more ASOT style stuff on their sets. It's the only way to maintain their popularity and keep the gigs coming. (as well keeping their spot on DJ Mag poll)

It pains me to see a lot of good producers produce ASOT/Anjuna trash hoping that something sticks and they get noticed again. Maybe Dumonde got it right. They saw the sign on the wall and left the trance scene with their integrity intact.

I don't believe all is lost yet though. Stop going out to typical trance events and pick your parties. Support DJs that still maintain their own sound that makes them unique in the trance world. I personally like Stoneface & Terminal, Simon Patterson, W & W, John '00' Fleming, Christopher Lawrence, for example because I can tell that they still play an unique sound that makes them stand out from the horde of unicorn plur trance DJs that plays mainstream trash.

Start crate digging. Stay away from popular trance podcasts and start looking elsewhere. Don't be afraid to listen to something new. Listen go stuff like Mirco de Govia's Iconic Path or Airwave's Toareg or Solar Field's Earth Shine.
Personally I'm loving progressive trance right now, as well trance at 130 bpm because it's something different, and I can connect well with that sound with my love of prog house. I love Jaytech. Discovering Arty has been a revelation to me. Best trance mix I've heard this year? Max Graham's Cycles 2 mix. Trust me. It's good

It's frustrating to go through tons of trash, but you find that one tune that rekindles your love of trance, and it's all worthwhile. Hence why I'm on a bit of trance binge, when a lot of my friends have moved away from trance.

My opinion: Not only do I agree that most trance has become repetitive and boring (see the posts in this thread, and I agree with most of it), but going to 2-3 parties a weekend doesn't help either.

It reminds me of when I was younger, and made a mixed cassette tape of all of my fav songs and put it on repeat a thousand times. Even though I claimed the songs as "my favourites" I was sick of every last song within weeks! Now imagine taking the same boring, repetitive trance tracks we have all been complaining about, putting those tracks on this tape and listening to it over...and over...and over.... SNOOZEFEST 2011.

Not using discretion in choosing/moderating your music and parties will lead to EDM overload, burnout and boredom.....add that to the lack of variety that is being put out there, and it leads to people yearning for that original feeling of euphoria and emotion that we all felt when we first heard our favourite songs

Yeah, where is trance going?

I'm taking it in another direction by mentioning the Trance on Beatport, but the top 10 Trance is horrendous.

MEM - Forza has been in the top 10 for like 4 months. Something is wrong.

btw, why does everyone label tracks and labels so much? are we shopping at bloomingdales? no matter who made it, if the track sounds great, it is great. if it sucks, it sucks.

so then your 99% makes bart claessen, mat zo, and sunny lax all crap? look, every label has some not so good tracks, but anjuna is one the most consistent for the amount they release a year. don't get me wrong, the super8 and tab album sucked for the most part and the nitrous oxide album wasn't too inspiring either, but even the worst anjuna releases are hard to compare to how bad armada has become.

Guys, i myself am a lover of trance. once in a while a hot new trance toon comes out and i dig it. but to tell you the truth i found myself evolving to more of the matt darey / eric prydz / adam beyer sound. The trance scene has obviously disappeared. Call me crazy but the new trance is something like the eric prydz sound!

I moved over to techno in 2004-2005 just because the era of great trance was already on it's way out the door then. I really do love to go back though and listen to the classics and reminisce about the great times and great friends and all those amazing times we had all going out together

Seven Cities is always one of those good reminiscing tracks!!
