This. Of course it was over-dramatized and stereotype-laden. Then again, so are ballets. See what I did there?

I also really liked the use of black and white, and mirrors, even though they're such obvious choices for symbolism. It didn't come off as cheap, imo.

Thanks for this, kind of helps with some of the confusion after having seen this last night!

Intense movie, I'll give it that!

Unbelievably disturbing movie, but fantastic movie. Natalie Portman deserves an oscar.

Also, if you are in danger of becoming or have been schizophrenic, do not watch this movie.

Seen it last night. Definitely one of the better movies I've seen lately.

just saw it last night.the acting was great yes.and the story has some great disturbing parts and it seems like its building towards something epic and it.just .doesent.happen.

a better ending and i would have been sold on it.it just didnt go anywhere.a shame it had potential to me.portman will probably win the academy award but i dont think she should.

i dont know i guess im just not sophisticated enough

*goes to watch stepbrothers*

You don't have to be sophisticated, that's what's so great about this film, imo. If you don't think it's building towards something you clearly didn't get the point from the start. It's about Portman's character struggling to discover and embrace something about herself - her dark side - and when she finally does, it kills her. The thing that makes this film so amazing is that the themes and plot were right in your face the whole time, and yet it was still gripping/intriguing.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Jan-05-2011 19:51:

actually to me it was about a girl battling with psychosis being sheltered for so long and being mentally fucked up from her mom and the stresses of being a dancer, that when she finally tried drugs for the first time her schizophrenia kicked in...

but ya theres the whole battle of her dark side vs good side too happening during her whole psychiotic episode.

thats what made it so fuckin cool

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-05-2011 19:58:

Lol, that's certainly one way to look at it. But taking into consideration the Swan Lake ballet story itself, the Nina/Black Swan story seems meant to also mirror that one (ie a contemporary retelling of Swan Lake).

Alright, since we're dropping spoilers here, I felt the line at the end about "perfection is possible" over her dying as a result of attaining it was pretty trite.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-05-2011 20:45:

Shit, really? I missed that. Gay.

YOU'R JUST MAKING IT WORSE. I HATE THESE FUCKING PARTIES, ANYWAY. I WASNT EVEN INVITED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Yeah, bet you didn't even realize. Or maybe you did, with your shifty glances and your eagerness to turn a shoulder to the unknown guest. I'm taking my Svedka and leaving! FUCK.

Posted by shaw on Jan-05-2011 20:58:

...but seriously, though. Does no one see the similarity? It's not even subtle.

I don't recall if I've seen the piano teacher so I can't really say. But I can def see the Devil's Advocate. R

I basically threw that in for the progressing hallucinations. The Piano Teacher is Black Swan with ugly people, no special effects, and more centered around sex. Same mom/daughter relationship, same premise of performance arts obsession, same downward spiral, same ending.
