Actually, we should get rid of the kicks and make chillout. Much less need for sidechaining then.

Seriously, I love it when people say "don't ever use an offbeat bass pattern. So overdone, so boring" and someone else says "don't ever use a rolling bassline. So overdone, so boring". It's similar to asking people for feedback on a song - a large percentage of feedback comes down to personal biases rather than anything being wrong with the song.

i'd like to see a track without sidechain, rolling bassline and offbeat bass. A track that is a hit without any of this (and don't link me a chill out /ambient track...) some people here must be production monsters if can avoid this kind of cliches.

Best use of sidechain is when you don't actually hear it...(Aside from a slightly-> moderately punchier kick)

Sometimes with 7-8 layers going on, 3 of them being basslines, sidechain is your kick's best friend. (They don't necessarily gotta pump tho)

And what's wrong with side-chaining whitenoise? Kinda fond of that pumpy whu whu whuuuuuushhhh. Also works nice as a gate to add some pop to your percs.

I feel significantly dumber after having read this thread.

Guys, I hate duplication more than anybody, but did you actually try the search? I searched for "ableton side chain" for up to 1 year ago and the results were useless.

I did find this Ableton side chain thread via Google, but it's pretty old. I also found sidechaining in Reason ... possible? and Sidechain Compression in Reason: Kick and Bass - also via Google, in-site search is totally useless.

Again, not to encourage duping here but maybe someone could actually be, y'know, helpful, and link a tutorial or previous thread. It's not that heavily duplicated a topic, except in jokes and quips of course...

I'm bored so I'll bite...(It's already been linked, twice i think...but like I said...I am really...really bored)

Took me a single search...

and...

Reason 4 and Abelton 8.

Youtube should change it's name to Tutorialtube.

lots of classic guys including Alphazone did not use side chain despite using the rolling bass sound. Side Chain is not necessary as it really is a lazy way to automate. Handy but not essential. None of these tunes are using side chain. And to complicate the matter even further for those analog purists, the SHOKK tune is all software the main synth from VAZ. SIde chain really didn't become prevalent until about 2002 onwards.

spot on. have i really said analog sidechain that many times during the last 6 months? hahaha i have truly hated the topic for a long time.

How do you know that the Alphazone track isn't using sidechain? At least the bass sounds like sidechained. The second track counts as an example, but at the drop when all is thrown the sound is sloppy , a real mess.

I don't like at all when the sidechain is so obvious.

After the breakdown, too obvious sidechain...

i know first hand. They didn't start using sidechain techniques about 1 year later.
