you could suggest one..

I was mostly getting a bad feeling when I remembered that Gabber, Schranz and 2 Step Garage (which we all have here) are three genres that have not been mixed in previous editions.

Edit: Trip-Hop too...

The ones I've never heard of are UK Funky and Braindance. If the latter is more or less IDM then it's not so obscure but surely quite difficult to some people and also a candidate for not getting made imho.

I have no problem with hard or obscure genres, it's just that this whole thing only works when most people deliver their mixes, so I feel more comfortable with many easy selections.

nice call.

Lews mixed triphop/downtempo last challenge. i squirm a bit to get schranz (montana got this one last time, although his mix was more towards hard techno), gabber, and hardstyle, tho. ill end up vetoing one before the end.

disco. and no, not italo, or nu-disco, i'll accept using boogie but not the stuff that more or less sounds like (proto)-house. i mean disco. i will accept people using subtle edits for mixability but no fucking full on revenge/todd terje/prins thomas/who else reworks.

Yea, because everybody has an old disco record collection sitting around...

Anyway, I don't like where this is going so far so I'm gonna sit it out this time around.

Posted by montana on Jan-23-2011 21:18:

people just stop with the fucking arguing. if you want to play, come out swinging and do it properly, do your research (ask around or google/discogs/whatever) and get the records you can work with. if you don't want to do that just sit this round out and shut up.

the two first rounds i played i got eurodance & downtempo/ambient. in both cases it was genres i've done mixes in before. and well, might i add (if i'm allowed to stroke my ego). in round 4 i remember wanting breaks or electro but i got schranz and while i actually like boshy type techno. it's not the genre i usually play on a regular basis. but did i ever bitch about it? no. i just did it.

lets have a challenge where we don't go safe and use subgenres. you know it's challenge for someone that plays epic trance to play say house and for someone that plays breaks to play disco or whatever. but it's all rhythm driven 4/4 music. put any of those mother******s infront of the challenge to play, say idm or the big mountain that is future-jazz or whatever, let's get out of the safety zone for real this time.

so, in conclusion. come out and play or sit it down and shut up.

I stand by my statement.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-23-2011 21:24:

for me right now looks a bit difficult, there are some genres i'm not familiar at all but this is a good way to do research of some genres you'd never.

Don't be silly. In 2011, noone actually needs old disco vinyl to put together a short mix of disco.

Fair enough, but I guess if I were to do one like that I'd need some help in understanding where to draw the line between what's accepted and what isn't.

You are the line .

Posted by Adam420 on Jan-23-2011 21:59:

HEhe yea I guess. It's not like you get penalized for not really sticking to what the person who suggested your genre had in mind.

Posted by Teezdalien on Jan-24-2011 00:53:

In with uplifting trance.

lol @ all the whinging ****s in here.

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Jan-24-2011 19:13:

I'm in, my genre (since 2step has been taken!) is Detroit Techno

I opt out of Gabber

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-24-2011 19:15:

At last some common genres are showing up, i think however disco should be enwidened a bit, i don't envy the one who has to mix that.

Posted by RebeL9 on Jan-24-2011 19:54:

I would love to mix classic disco.

+1. It's probably one of the few genres here that would actually be a real challenge for myself, which is what this should be about.

What the hell kind of genre is Mr. Game + Watch?

Haha i didn't notice. IDM, Uk Funky... that would be interesting for me, i'd have to do a lot of research. Old disco isn't that hard but as i've said the OP has drawn a narrow band.

Just to avoid a misunderstanding (happened in the past), you do know that submitting a genre always means that you have to do a mix, right?
