I just hope that everyone on the Pacific coastlines get the evacuation warnings in time, I mean, it's nighttime that side of the world, right?

It's half-past midnight in California, so about 10:30pm in Hawaii. It's late, but not too late to warn people.

The Al Jazeera broadcast is great.

All the highways and train bridges/elevated railways were built to sustain a large a quake. Not at all compared to a lot of parts of Seattle or Tacoma.

Compared to Japan, no. Compared to the rest of the world, we're pretty damn well off.

The BBC are broadcasting the same video stream.

they keep showing the same images. i wanna see what's happening now :/

Posted by Ian on Mar-11-2011 08:44:

This is awful for the people of Japan but we know from experience that they are leaders at engineering against earthquake damage so hopefully it won't bring down as much as it could do in other less developed regions, Haiti being a perfect example of that. The tsunami though could be the big killer depending if and where it makes ground and how well warned those people are.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Mar-11-2011 08:50:

jesus they're saying the tsunami in sendai was up to 33 feet

the first report i read was "13 foot tsunami"

Posted by DaveT on Mar-11-2011 08:51:

Tsunami watch for west coast of US. If anything happens, Tsunami will hit San Francisco around 8:08am.

4 million buildings in Tokyo w/o power. WOW!

Hawaii doing mandatory evac of lower areas. sirens blaring in the middle of the night there.

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Mar-11-2011 08:57:

Yea, I figure the sirens will be starting pretty soon on the Washington coast. Some parts of it are very flat, very far inland and this is the sort of thing they are very worried about there.

The P.I. is reporting currently that there is no warning for the West Coast.

YES.

They'd better be keeping Lira and his girl safe!

The past 10-15 years even the east coast of the US started enforcing Siesmic standards for developing buildings except not as strict as the main earth quake regions. At least technology is finally catching up with the forces of nature.

Hope for the best

Posted by enydo on Mar-11-2011 09:06:

Apparently the entire Pacific Rim is currently under a Tsunami watch, at the least.

This type of stuff is always so surreal and saddening.

Yea, modern buildings are fine, but a lot of our other infrastructure, bridges, tunnels, etc, are very old and not up to the same codes and standards. The Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle is a big concern, since viaducts like that one collapsed in Oakland and Kobe and killed many people.

Yea, I am hearing that the whole Pacific basin is under watch at the moment. Even if a 1m wave gets there at high tide it could be fairly dangerous.

online i read that they don't expect it to hit california or the west coast...but on TV now they're saying that it's still a possibility.

You've just got to believe that they are. My parents best friends son was in New York when 9/11 hit and it was 2 days before they got news that he was ok with phonelines and chaos that ensued. I can't imagine what they must've felt because he was working downtown nearby.

It will take about 20 hours to get there, apparently.

If anyone is still worried about Lira, I realized just now he had sent me his fiances phone number if anyone wants to try and contact him. I am sure he is fine though.

Send her a quick text mate. I'm sure he's fine, but better to know for sure, right?

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Mar-11-2011 09:33:

lira is able-bodied and remarkably intelligent...if the area he's in is dealing with the tsunami or other damage i'm sure he's fine. in fact, i'm sure he has a japanese woman in each arm, their ample-bosoms threatening to block his view as he carries them to safety.
