But that was my personal choice, after testing and see the pros and cons of all options. By then, I didn't give a fck about what people may think about it. You could have the best set-up in the world, DJing is 90% about you, not the gear. It's mostly a learning and emotional process about your passion for it, how you want to do it, and finally, figure out if you have the chops to bring it to a professional level, or if it's just an hobby. So start slow and have fun with it. Then add quality gear when you feel you reach a point where you think your gear is stopping you from getting better. See why, and how. Gear will change every year until then.

sorry martin you got me totally wrong.

you interpreted my three sentences like being together.

i was just suggesting a way to learn beatmatching. you don't learn beatmatching looking at a wave form. You can obviously use anything to mix. two turntables and 2 vinyls is what i've been told each time i've asked where to start. This way you don't learn mixing looking at wave forms and using auto mix :P

then i specified you need to develop your ear, like you said.

then i find djs that know about music, reading it, writing it, necessarily make more developed melodies. This just based on my perception of music production.

i never said mixing is making music... was only suggesting that you don't make music with software, if you wanna produce aligning sounds in garageband for me it's not writing music. A melody doesn't get created in software, it does in your head. Find a way to reproduce it after, yes using instruments & softwares.

and yes i'm not a dj. just been promoting you for 8 years :P

I just sold my beginner DJ gear 2 weeks ago after upgrading, woulda sold it to you for sure. Oh well..

Some advice, don't get discouraged. Practice makes perfect. It's going to take a few weeks to get the hang of the pitch control and jog wheels.

Like others said, study the structure of the songs, most house tracks have a similar song structure, and start counting beats in your head. Pay attention closely and you'll know when a break is coming or when the hi-hat pattern comes in, etc...


Another thing, buy a pair of quality headphones FIRST before buying an awesome mixer or decks. Headphones are much more important then a fancy mixer, but it's usually the last thing beginner DJs buy or care about, thinking any shitty pair of cans will do, or god forbid earbuds lol..

Finally, I can recommend you these books, I've skimmed thru both of them and they've helped me tonnes. I haven't read them cover to cover, a lot of the things I knew already but it's full of useful information, that can help you decide what gear to buy, how to hook up your gear, etc..

Don't listen to anyone ITT. They're already established and just want to keep you down to reduce competition.

Let me put you on the fast track here:
1. First you need a name. The more gimmicky the better. If you can think of a costume or theme to pursue then even better, look at what the mau5head has done for a certain DJ as of late.

2. Don't worry about equipment. The big clubs you're playing at will have some to use and you need to invest your money into #3.

3. Beatport. Nuf said. Go download the top 100 and top 25 for whatever genre is hot (electro/dirty dutch, dubstep...). Just ride whatever is "in" with the 17-21 year old crowd there out there. They're the ones with daddy's money to spend so go reap the rewards. Once you got this track collection you can pretty much just make your playlist and hit randomly cause all tracks are guaranteed to be nothing but awesome.

4. With your catchy name and killer tracks you should be off to a good start. Now you need to find a hot broad or two to fill that booth up with her and her friends. Looks required, brains not so much.

5. You're big now. No learning, wasted time/money invested. Just enjoy it. Don't bother with friends of the past cause you got a life of winning thats far beyond what they can help you with anymore.

6. Twitter, twitter, and more twitter. Tweet till your thumbs bleed. Then tweet about how your thumbs are bleeding. You're the man now and people want to know what you're doing and thinking at all times. Every event needs to be announced as EPIC and every town you play in needs to know they're the best group you ever had the pleasure of playing for. Feed the need and enjoy it cause you're big now.
