well i want to compress the kick and the bass together, after the kick and bass are separately EQ and compressed i then buss them together with one last compression.

i tried listening to the mix with some other headphones and the noise disappeared so i guess its my phones. however how do i know that the kick wont do that on speakers? mine are really shit and so i dont trust their audio quality in the least.

ill probs get flamed for this but oh well> whats a transient?

The initial attack of a sound. It usually contains very valuable information which defines the character of the sound. Pads usually fade in slowly and doen't really have transients. A snaredrum has a very powerfull transient.

A transient can roughly be interpreted as a volume spike if you will.

I was wondering the same thing myself storyteller, I appreciate your explanation. How would one go about sidechaining a sound to a transient of a kick? Ive heard talk of sidechaining using transients as the trigger. How do you select the transient of a sound to be the trigger, I'm sure it varies from DAW to DAW or certain softwares, but how is this done?

Well that would be relatively easy. You can cut a sample so only the initial attack sound is what's left and use that to trigger some kind of compressor.

Or you could sett the threshold of a compressor on a relatively high amount of dB (close to the 0dB mark) so it will only trigger on the loud parts of a sound. These would usually be the transients .

I hope this is a clear enough explanation for you.

Right on man, this is perfectly clear! I think i'll try both methods. Sampling the transient seems like it would be more precise and accurate but setting the thres higher seems easier :P Thanks for the information! By the way, I think sometime ago as I was lurking TA I came across your soundcloud page and downloaded your track torn apart, I fucking love it.

Thank you for the kind words . It's an old one of which the contract has expired so I put it up for free download. It's still for sale too. Apparently some labels don't really respect their own contracts. Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
