Many of his films are bad, yes, but Schindler's List isn't.

Haha, he's got some duds but Spielberg is most certainly not terrible.

Posted by Lews on Jun-13-2011 00:37:

Abrams sucks. I'm not wasting my money to watch this in theatres.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Jun-13-2011 01:03:

Schindler's List was a good film, but I don't think Spielberg had much to do with that at all. In fact, I think Spielberg's influence on the film detracted from it more than anything else. He failed when it came to portraying the jews. He painted them as victims first and foremost, not as human beings. Isn't that where the real drama is- their humanity? Spielberg consistently does that same exact thing, insisting upon himself, and it's why he often gets sub-par performances out of his actors.

I thought this thread was about the trance act Super 8

How did you come to this conclusion? How, specifically, does Spielberg fail at making such a distinction, and, considering the totality of the film's historical backdrop as well as its focus, how does one not portray human beings being subjected to their extermination as victims? I'm not saying you're wrong, and it's been years since I saw the film, but that's not a conclusion I would draw from my personal recollection of it.

Maybe he'll redeem himself with Cowboys and Aliens. But "easily" the most overrated director? What about Michael Bay for god's sake!?

Posted by Lews on Jun-13-2011 03:35:

I don't think anyone thinks Bay makes good movies.

I would say Abrams is most overrated, but Nolan comes in a close second.

Cowboys and Aliens is directed by Jon Favreau. Spielberg's next film as director is Adventures of Tintin.

Speilberg has a very solid resume to backup...

Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List
Hook (childhood favorite. don't hate)
Indiana Jones series
ET
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
wrote The Goonies

i can see where the Super 8's framework came from. I can sense the similarities to The goonies (family oriented, kids from broken families, kids going beyond expectations), and ET (sci fi, kids interact with an alien)

people are putting Abrams on a very high pedestal because of Alias, Lost, and Fringe. It is always bad to be preset on a high position before starting off, because the only direction you are going is down.

Oops. You're right. Spielberg is a producer on that, not directing. He is also slated to direct "Lincoln" (obviously a biopic on Abe Lincoln), a movie called "War Horse" (something to do with world war 1 but looks kinda gay), and Robopocalypse (about a robot uprising). So he has some potential good ones in the queue.

I thought he did a really good job directing "Munich" in 2005 too.

But... The Blair Witch Project was horrible... Although I agree with your premise, there have at LEAST been better movies since the BWP...

just saw this it was good. Incendies was good as well, probably one of the better films in the last while. I think the trick to watching good movies is to avoid american movies.

Michael Bay is most definitely not an overrated director. Everyone pretty much knows he sucks.

Yeah, Michael Bay movies make money because they're fun. Not because they're good.

Though I'm not ashamed to admit that I love Armageddon. Great characters, music, and effects in that one.

Bay is very good at using visuals to create an emotional impact, the problem is he needs to hold himself back more. It's like he can't help but overdo it.

Posted by infinity HiGH on Jun-14-2011 06:04:

My favourite movie of his is The Rock. Armageddon was pretty good too but you could tell he was going overboard with it.

Posted by Capitalizt on Jun-14-2011 09:07:

See the new X-men instead. It was awesome..way better than the previous xmen movies.
