I see Sasha mentioned outside of TA a hell of a lot more than Cox. He's on the front page of Beatport right now, for example. Although Cox is on the front page of RA, which admittedly undermines my original point somewhat.

That's a great description of all the shit that doesn't matter. All the fluff that people complain about, all the things that the superstar celebrity douchebag djs own these days.

To remain popular and still play all over the world, despite forgoing this nonsense, is an awesome achievement.

It seems really weird a black dude playing this sorta stuff, aside from the guy out of tilt I cannot literally think of another black guy that plays non-urban edm.

Geez, you gotta be fucking kidding mate. Carl Craig, Rob Hood, Alexis Tyrel, Octave One, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Todd Terry, Larry Heard, DJ Bone, Frankie Knuckles and loads and loads more.

What? Are you a fucking idiot? It's weird that a black guy plays techno? Techno was invented by black guys, house was invented by black guys. Most of the most stone-cold legendary DJs of all time were black.

I didn't say it did matter. What I've made extremely clear is that relevance is usually an essential part of popularity, and it's very unusual to see a DJ remain popular whilst losing relevance. That's what this thread is all about.

Being the founder and owner of the Intec record label is Carl Cox perhaps getting some secondary "relevancy" from there?

My feeling is that Intec isn't extremely relevant either but I might be mistaken.

It's not as popular as many other labels pushing this sound but their releases still get picked up by a lot of DJs.

Concerting the OP, Jack you're obviously referring strictly to his production side. In clubland he is still very relevant, trust me. The man has basically owned Ibiza for the last 2 years, and his local appearance on Sunday will be sure to sell out.

True about Ibiza. Each year he runs a high profile weekly party throughout the whole season with top guest DJs. That got to count for something

carl cox is a beast. more existed to catch him in ibiza than anyone else. listen to his opening party from space ibiza from this year and you'll understand. all 7.5 hours.

Saw him in Ibiza last year - mediocre, same at Dance Valley in 2005 or 6 - average at best, i think his best days are far behind him

Indeed, and I wasn't having a go.

Lots of people were raving about his Electric Zoo set, I managed to catch the first half and it was very good... tent was pretty packed too. And interesting to see Cox pop up on RA's front page, too!
