32 has sort of become the 'standard' in house music (particularly the really generic rubbish). I've got a lot of tracks with intros twice that long (and a lot without any intro whatsoever!)

But this is it, there aren't (and shouldn't be) any hard and fast rules, you use whatever works for your track.

I love tracks with 64 bar intros. I like to drag my mixes out loong, up to 6 minutes long, so it's nice when you have a gradual intro to mix in, instead of looping 1,2,4,8 whatever bars. Most people probably won't notice, but it can get a tendency to sound a bit loopy sometimes lol.

I've also noticed that alot of the new techno music that's being released has "unusual" intro lengths. 24 bars and 40 being the weirdest ones. 48 bars seems to be a big hit though.

I don't think there is anything wrong with just taking a break from the pace. Mixing the outro into the next song's intro is overrated imo, it's always about track selection and always will be.

Seriously. I think a breather would be good for the dance floor.

Totally, although no one really wants complete silence...

I've got a few beatless loops I sometimes mix into between tracks to give exactly that effect, kind of like a breakdown between tunes. They can work very well. And tracks without long drums-only intros & outros normally work best either side of them.
