i've alway thought the automation features in Logic and I suppose along with it the midi quite limited. I wish there were better tools for curves, different types of waves and what not like in cubase. It is really rudimentary. I also wish there was like a midi generator similar to like audio but just digital information which you can imagine would be quite handy.

Automation is basically the same in Logic as it is in any other major daw - the only one that really excells beyond the rest is PTDH as it has so many curve options for fading between audiofiles.

However in Logic you can make any curve you want. Here's a simple good tutorial on how to make different automation curves.

Granted, there are not preset curves to select from a drop down, like in PTHD or Cubase, but once you know the control&shift commands (etc) it's actually faster than selecting a preset curve.

In terms of midi, logic really is the leader IMO, and has been for a long while. You can literally adjust any midi perameter, and since they incorporated they midi edit window back in version 8 (rather than having to go in to another edit page) it has never been easier. You have everything there that you need - quantise functions and presets, midi edit tools.

The only thing that logic sucks at is the built in midi arp is crap.

I would suggest getting five12's Numerology - it does everything you could want from an arp; step sequencing, transposing, gating etc.

try to use a sine wave or any other common periodic wave as your automation source, You can't while most others can. The control of the curves are really modest. Cubase is way better for midi. I mean logic and how the midi is set up does not allow for midi plugins or generators which is a huge deficiency.

And that is just automation, editing midi is a nightmare and hyperdraw makes no sense at all.

Would anyone consider Presonus Studio One seriously? I'm rather keen to give it a try.

Absolutely. It's made by former Cubase developers and it's a full-featured DAW with a very intuitive workflow and excellent features for MIDI-based production. Some of the features of the imminent S1v2 release were just leaked the other day and it includes some very useful features.

I've been recommended it several times now. The best part is that it appears half the price of other DAWs.

I'm seriously considering switching to it and telling Propellerheads where to shove their underwhelmingly overpriced software.

[hijack]If you're thinking about getting it, I'd recommend keeping an eye out for Studio One Artist - audiomidi sold it for $29 last month, so you can probably pick it up secondhand for around that price. Check KVR's Market Place thread and/or run a WTB thread. Then buy the upgrade to the full version, which is currently $99 until Oct 31 - not sure how much the upgrade to v2 from v1 or from Artist will be, but I'm sure that you'll save money either way. Sorry for hijacking - back OT.[/hijack]

Logic does allow for midi plugins - I suggested one arp AU earlier.

As for the waveforms, you can do it all in Object Hyperdraw (control+option for curves) - Yes, it doesn't have the dropdowns but then it's a few clicks and you're set.

If you want a shortcut: create a 1-bar object and draw automation over it in the arrange hyper draw (usually 1 cycle of a sine wave), then I choose "copy track automation data to object" and then loop the object . That way you can also easily sync the automation by adjusting the length of the arrange object with an alt-drag

but why cna't they just have a sine wave curve you can just use like any other line. Honestly, it would take maybe 2 hours of programming. I know the environement can act like a plugin but what i mean is like why is there not a way for you to have a sine generator in the environment. Or at least some math scripting to do it yourself if you have to.

I never liked the midi in logic. And I hate hyper draw. I don't understand why it is even there. You shoudl be able to do all that in the piano roll CC area.

They should just copy photoshops pen tool and the curves you can do with that along with a bunch of presets.

I think logic is still hanging on to a few outdated ideas from the old emagic days, especially the hyperdraw and environment.

Ableton < REWIRE> Logic

^ now that is mindblowing.

Ableton Live is very easy to use, especially when you're first learning. Having said that, I would like to learn how to work with Logic one day (but this won't be happening any time soon I imagine as I'm not a fan of MAC OS).
