btw, you won't find a "contrast ratio" on a plasma,
because that is a problem inherent of LCDs (low quality black, ghosting, etc)

Why? I never said $400 is the absolute maximum it's a range. And I'm not asking what are the best TVs out there, period. In that case you'd have a point. I'm just looking to see what's the best that $400 can get me, and also in general I'm asking for help with buying a TV since there are a lot of factors to consider that I don't know much about.

And fyi, you never know, I might end up dropping more than $400 if it was really worth it.

Suggestion: buy the cheapest Panasonic plasma from this year's line (whatever that is). Unless you are Nou and the only thing ever on the TV is one game, burn-in shouldn't be a problem. Shit, I played Mario 64 for the better part of a few days a while back on my plasma, 4x3 bars and all. I don't give a fuck. Everything else about them, for the price, is way better. Shy of the new Elite LEDs, NEC monitors, or a Sunbrite (ignoring their monstrous cases), I'd take a $3000 Panny over any other TV out there.

With that said, I don't plan on settling for 720p. One thing I've told myself is that after waiting all this time to get a new TV, I won't get anything less than 1080p.

Thanks. I will definitely look at some Plasma option then. but Plasma only comes in larger sizes, right?

Good 720 TV >>>>>> bad 1080 TV, unless you are going to hook it up to a computer. Then, yes, get 1080. Don't get hung up on numbers. Go look at the TVs and pick one. You can't read your way to the best decision.

lol, this is just like when I bought a new printer a few weeks ago. So many fucking things to consider. Good thing the printer was only an $80 investment though (was down from like $140 I think).

They're hit or miss like any TV but if they break down after warranty expires you may be shit out of luck. Those cheaper brands usually buy parts in bulk and those parts may not be available after a while (unlike major brands which usually have an excess amount of spare parts).

Just go with a 40" Toshiba, Panasonic or Sharp. Samsung makes great TV's but you're usually paying a premium for the brand name. Go 120hz (only use it for sports and gaming as it makes movies and shows look like they're filmed with a handheld) and LED. I think all TV's are 1080p nowadays however there isn't much difference between the 2.

Edit: Oh and since you're considering plasmas, as long as you don't use it as a computer monitor then that's the best option. The technology has come a long way and offers much better picture quality than LCD. Just don't bother with 3D TV's. Serious waste of money on a stupid gimmick.

No...why would I have a Wii? I'm past the days of buying a console just so I can play 1 or 2 exclusives on it. I'm going to be buying a PS3 at the same time as the TV. Yes I held out on one of those as well but with Dark Souls having just come out and the new Ace Combat not far off, I just have to get one. Plus there's Uncharted 3 and Skyrim that will come out soon.

42" Sharp TV

Don't buy Sharps.

Make sure it's got 1240p at 840 Hz. Tell the salesman this is exactly what you're looking for. When he tries to explain to you that such a television doesn't exist, call him a fucking idiot and ask to speak to his manager.

The Remote Control.

Korean is the way to go. Samsung or LG. Sony is overpriced and I heard Keyshawn Johnson owns a Panasonic.

$50 says Keyshawn Johnson has Vizios.

So I bought a TV today...



Panasonic Viera, 32" LCD, 1080p, 178 degree viewing angle, game mode, speakers on the bottom....overall this TV is pretty win and it's a perfect size for me.

Was on sale for $399 and I had a no GST voucher so it pretty much ended up being $430 after tax.
