Originally posted by tranceforeva you'll be fine. there's plenty of sketch bags and zombies but many more who just want to party and dance til the sun comes up. it's definitely safe if you can stay in control of yourself or have some friends around if you get a little too drunk, which is pretty much the story everywhere anyway. you won't see any police around but i've never seen anything even close to a fight here if you are going during high season try to book your hotel at least a month before, the good ones get sold out well in advance
When are you headed over? We are planning for around this time next year (January or February). Was going to go this year during the summer, but after further investigation on the weather, we are postponing til next winter. This Winter (2012) was just too soon on the budget, unfortunately

Definitely avoid those those islands during the monsoon season(summer). The best time to actually go is this time of the year, up until about April. Really beautiful beaches, but Had Rin beach which is the main beach on that island has sea fleas that bite and sting a little bit. So I'd recommend asking about other beaches on other parts of the island.
You can get pretty good deals on lodging, I don't know what you might be looking to spend. The food is awesome, and it's pretty cheap as well. You might want to rent yourself a little motor bike to get around as well, or else there are plenty of taxis.
The Full Moon party itself is a lot of fun, eventhough the music is pretty crappy, lots of psy-trance & hip hop, but there's thousands of people partying on the beach until the sun comes up. Like Paryhopper mentioned, they do have a pretty cool after party at an outdoor club called The Backyard, up the hill from the beach on top of a cliff, looking down on the ocean where they play some prog-house/tribal. Lee Burridge used to play there back in the day, it's actually a really nice venue. I can't wait to go back to those islands, I always pass through there when I'm in Bangkok. Enjoy!

One year ago at The Backyard (on the hill):

...looks like I'll have to venture there sometime in the future as well. Looks extremely fun... On another note, I noticed a person w/ a Space Ibiza shirt on in that video... just felt like pointing that out.

I lived in Bangkok for about a year and half, but I decided to pass on the full moon parties.
There are so many different ways to party over there. There's the expat scene, the backpacker scene, the Thai scene, the model scene.. and they're all vastly different. Depending on what kind of experience you want there determines what are must do-s and what are must avoids.
As for Bangkok, the party scene is getting better there every day. I can fill anyone in who's interested

Spoke to my friend Sophie......she says:
The parties were fab back in the day but now its where the criminals go to scam tourists and steal from their bungalows.
The beaches end up looking gross by midnight with people puking and pissing everywhere.
The music is so loud from every bar you hear three songs at once. She would definitely not recommend it to anyone.
She says that the Gili islands in Lombok, Indonesia are being touted as the next Ibiza party islands.

Wow, that is pretty sick!
Only thing that sucks is that I dont think we will be going to Koh Samui.
Our tentative schedule looks like:
Bangkok: 3 days
Northern Thailand (Chaing rai and Chiang Mia) 2-3 days
Koh Phangan (3 days)
Phuket 5-6 days (meeting friends there)
Krabi (3-4 days) at this place to relax after such a long vaca:

If I may, I'd suggest cutting out some of your time in Phuket, unless that time will be spent visiting islands.. and thats still a long time. Phuket isn't someplace you want to spend much time in
.
Are you a diver? There's so much amazing diving down there. If you're not, think about going to Ko Tao and getting your diving license.. cheap and lots of fun.
Yes, please suggest! We are doing most of our island hopping from there, hence the long stay. We are also staying there a little longer because our friends from Australia and Holland will be crossing over in Phuket during that time to meet up with us for a stay. I would consider staying in Krabi longer, but is freakin expensive as hell and we wouldnt have as much time to see our friends. Do you suggest staying elsewhere for island hopping? Thats our main reason for going, really.
Whats Ko Tao? I would love suggestions!
Again, this stuff is VERY tentative because its still nearly a year away AND we need to plan with people coming from several different countries.

Originally posted by tranceforeva it's pretty simple, if you like drinking, dancing, and meeting people from all over the world there's no place better in the world to be. if you're not in your 20s or think your partying days are behind you or don't like being around drunk people, then it's not for you. i'm definitely a little biased as i moved out here for a few months just for the full moon party and have spent probably close to half of the last 2 months on koh phangan

Oh my christ. You've been living on koh phangan?

Thats like coming to visit NYC and never leaving Pacha's basement.

I bet if you ever spend any time in BKK you'll stay on koh san road, eat grasshopers, order 5B pad thai, not shower and walk around shirtless and think you're experiencing culture.

Christ. If there's anything I avoid when I'm over there, its you. And there are LOTS of you. Did you just watch The Beach or something?
