I find it harder to be creative as it usualy seems everythings been done already. Of course not EVERYTHING has been done before but none the less trying to make something appreciably original is getting harder.

I fall into this trap of playing melodies with similar timing to so many other tracks, but this ends up sounding mediocre to me. Why watch a film if it's just like one you saw yersterday?

In a way part of the fun is trying to find the holy grail that is originality, but 'good' originality - too often I find originality is taken as a license to produce something just uninspiring, and even with such escoteric 'original' sounding numbers I can usualy find someone did a very similar thing 2 decades ago anyway (for example using field recordings has been pretty much done to death unless you are exceptionaly imaginative - Jean Michelle Jarre and Kraftwerk were using filed recordings way back in the early 80's).

People get way too caught up with originality. I guess if you're M4B who's an expert on fucking everything, you'd start to exhaust your patience for similar ideas, but there are so many people who just enjoy music on its own terms, instead of making it relative.

Not everyone who listens to music does so because they're looking for a completely new, unique experience. Hell, a lot of people shy away from music that isn't similar to the things they already enjoy, and what similarities they focus on is going to vary between every single person that listens to your music. For every person you win over for "originality", you'll scare off someone for straying too far off from the things they enjoy. You can't win.

I'm not saying don't strive for originality, but setting out to please everyone by being whatever they call "original" is hopelessly impossible. Just be original in your own craft. Borrow ideas, get inspiration in whatever way you can, and as long as you're honest to yourself and truly make music that you can call yours, you're already doing everything you can.

Human nature being what it is makes people curious about things that are novel and mysterious.

If I told you I made a trance track with a latin twist would you want to hear it?

I mean, I'd listen to it for the novelty but I would probably not enjoy it. Not a huge fan of latin music.

Curiosity is one thing but people like what they like, and it takes quite a bit to get them to actively step out of that comfort zone. Whether it's music, fashion, food, games, etc. etc... people are generally closed minded. I mean, shit, this forum is full of examples of that.

I think you are absolutely right that it is common and natural for people to have a fairly closed mind and conservative taste with music, usually gravitating to whatever made the biggest impression on them from ages 13 - 25 or so.

But I also think it is a good thing to actively work against that tendency in ourselves.

Very true, those teen years when our minds are ripe for impressions to be embedded are what forms many of our taste instincts.

People say to me 'you can't beat the late 70's/ early 80's for films', but this is just a function of thier own formative brain impressions. Every generation will tell you that films from thier era were the best, be it the 1950's or 1990's. In 1000 years time people will not be saying oh you can't beat the films of the 1990's!

I agree with you that it's not a bad idea to forcably override your own formative brain imprints with regards to taste. Challenge your reality tunnel as it were.

People are always saying you cant beat the trance of 2000 - 2005, but you know what, I think this is just plain wrong no matter what people say. If your brain was accepting formative brain imprints in that era, perhaps the first time you were properly exposed to trance, then thats why you happen to hark back to those tracks just as old rockers are CERTAIN the rock n roll of the Beatles / Elvis was surely the best ever.

Having said all of this, you cant beat my taste in films and music - I'm certain of it
