This hole debate boils down to one thing. Peoples elitist attitudes, they can no longer accept him because hes mainstream. Do you guys not like him because his music is for the masses? Thats about as narrowminded as you can get. Furthermore I like his new cd, and I like his new breakbeatesque sets. Lastly by moving away from the upligitng melodic trance, into something totally different done by much fewer djs he's going more "underground" if anything.

I never said people are thick to have an opinion on something. What I did say is that people are presuming he should be making trance music etc. Just because you don�t like the music, it doesn�t make it shit. It means that you do not like it. There is a big difference, and if you cannot comprehend that, then you really are thick.

Peace, and next time leave out the pettiness or I�ll do the same thing back. No-one is expected to watch the grammar on a forum, I know most people don�t, I certainly won�t be (not including this post).

You canno't critize something that you have no appreciation for. Put in to context:

You generally like and listen to trance music, and therefore a criticism is acceptable. However a criticism cannot be deemed worthy if you have no experience in that particular field (pop music?). I think it's up to the pop music fans to decide whether it is shit or not, not trance enthusiasts.

I think people have the right to be disapointed if a DJ they used to like change direction. I still like Oakenfolds sets but I really dont like the productions he has done recently.. Just because its a negative opinon I think I still should have the right to voice it. This forum would be very boring if everyone were only allowed to post 'Great' 'Super' etc.. etc...

'Tranceport' was/is/will be wicked. Oakey has done lots for the scene. Without him trance wouldn't be what it has become today. But nowadays he is just like an icon, a dino who has been in the scene since the beginning. I'm not saying he blows... but he also dosen't own ...

if a dj plays the same old tunes year in year out, sooner or later he's going to be labelled stale, uninnovative, unimaginative and people are gonna say "yea been there done that, heard it all before"

on the other hand a dj can diversify, explore new genres, create new music, tread new ground... and people will say that they're betraying their background, selling out etc etc etc...

Oakey is and still is one of the top DJs at the moment. I don;t know why so many people pay out his latest album. Just becasue it's not trance they think he has gone off the rails for some reason.
Look, the guy's done enough albums that are just amazing. Simply, the guy needs a break from trance. I've been liustening to some of his recent sets and they are pretty damn good. Oakey has definitely not lost his touch. He is 'the man' and will continue to be one of the top DJs around.

Totally agreed. A true master is someone that can embrace many styles and be adept at all of them. He is not afraid of change either and this keeps everything fresh and original.

Oakey also has many 'students' that have been helped by him in their career including forefront stars like Jan Johnson & Tiesto. Put this alongside the overhyped cr*p that you see being developed on 'Pop Idol' and you can see that Pokey is doing us a favour bringing quality electronic music to the forefront of the worlds ears. Its the sort of thing that gives the dance music industry more money for clubs, events, signing music, etc....

I suppose I just respect his experience and foresight in the music industry.

(p.s. I hate 'Starry Eyed Surprise' but I can totally see why he did it and what sort of music lovers errrr...love it)

Oakey has the right to experiment with new styles. Sure, I don't like this new direction that he is taking with his productions. I think Starry Eyed Surprise is a terrible track. The style is not something I find appealing. I despise it.

Despite this, I respect Oakey for the stuff he has done in the past. While Oakey continues on his merry way, I'll just keep listening to his 99 stuff...musical taste is subjective, Oakey can't please everyone. If the some rabid pedantic trance fans are unhappy I think they should stop whinging and go listen to Tranceport.

I haven't heard any of his recent sets so I can't comment on them.

I talked to him when he was in Miami and I told him that his new shit sucks...(before the bunkka release) and I was like when are you going to play some trance for once. He was like I bet you anything you'll like bunkka better than all my other CDs....so I went and got it what a fucking sellout. But I must say that he did play his old trance while he was in Miami, but I'm never going to see him again

Oakey doesn't want to stay the same! He doesn't want to play 99 trance forever! If you ask me I say GOOD ON HIM! I reckon at least 25% of people on TA were hooked to trance by Oakey! You actually mean he's becoming more popular right! But you choose to call it selling out because it makes you feel beter that you listen to music that has not "Sold Out"
Now with trance becoming more Popular in Australia does that mean that Trance is selling out in Aus? Or what about in 99? Did trance "Sell Out" in Europe. Of course none of you would ever say this because you like trance and have to defend it at all costs. But as soon as Oakey makes a more mainstream album he has "Sold Out".

Just respect him for who he is, what he's done for all you minions. Maybe you should all get back to your roots! Cause those words
"Paul Oakenfold live at Gatecrasher Lotherton Hall" still send shivvers down my spine and I don't think it will ever stop doing so.
