I guess I've always leaned more towards the progressive side of trance. I don't have much insight on the pure trance side of things but I do know that I enjoy the crap out of thomas datt's music for example, and I had a blast at the last trance show I went to(tritonal). pickings seem to have been slim indeed on the pure trance side though-I can only think of a few favs I liked lately such as ost & meyer-safari, audien-keep this memory (johan malmgren remix). will take a peek at some aly & fila tracklists.

not much of this type of d&b to be found, I know mat zo also does some as MRZA. if you know any other similar tunes feel free to let me know!
vocal & other d&b: schematic-my friend, technicolour & komatic-deepest blue. anything by breakshift & technicolour/komatic basically.

you probably know some or all of those if you're into d&b. if you like any of them I'll def recommend some more

Speaking of dnb, there seems to be an assualt on dnb running concurrently with the troubles in the trance genre: an increase in dubstep, while a decline in the poupularity of other dnb subgenres (ie jump-up, ragga). As an example, just yesterday I backed out of attending a party because I suspected that at lesst half was going to be dubstep. In fact, one of the dj's that was going to play once liked to play jump-up, up until 2 or 3 years ago; now he does mostly dubstep. A couple of months ago even, I went to a party where Deiselboy began pretty strongly with proper dnb but then devolved into dubstep and some other nonsense.

Still, I think thre might still be more of a balance between dnb and dubstep in the scsne than there is currently with trance vs trouse. I just hope that, yes, these are the bad phases of a cycle
that will eventually give way to something better sounding than most of the music popular now, whether in dnb or (especially)in trance.

#1- I agree completely about Aly & Fila. They shouldn't be lumped in with Norin & Rad or Ronski Speed, that's for sure. They play some pretty good fucking trance, and they definitely support underground tunes.

#2- FUCK YEAH AIRWAVE. The dude is just on fire all the time. Love everything he releases. A true trance hero.




I highly recommend everyone in this thread checks out Cosmithex. He's also a name to watch out for, he just keeps putting out track after amazing track.

As a person that started listening to Trance (and electronic music in general) in the mid 90's....yeah. I don't remember the last time I've listened to a Trance set (besides Eco's at Ultra).

I started noticing years back how repetitive and boring Trance started to sound. I actually stopped even before the Trouse shenanigans.

I think I just grew out of it too, finding myself listening to techno/tech house/prog house all the time.

II think its dead but that's OK BC it just makes the old times forever special.

listening to an old victor dinaire classic dunken sheik on a high g and d remix. he used to drop this bomb at his loft near atlantic ave in brooklyn 8 years ago around 6 am when we were all cracked out and the sun was shinning on his rooftop. GREAT TIMES

it just needs to survive this electroish, poor pruduction, and shitty mastering era. I'll give it 2-3 yrs before it comes back in Psycadelic roots. That is if it does survive this morphing of elecro element and bad saw waves sounds that every immature production as supplying now.

and we used to laugh at "castle in the sky"...

well, electro-trance may not be your thing but i have to disagree with you on the production quality aspect. i would say production is light years ahead of where it was in sound quality, almost every track that makes it onto the major shows is produced to an extremely high standard even by the lesser known guys.

mastering i do have to agree with you on, everything is suuuper loud because of the whole supply/demand with listenership moving to mostly ipod earbuds

well by poor production i mean as in composition. Everything is mostly boring lately. Almost every producer has no experience in music theory or any lesson at all except of mimicking Sonic academy or YouTube videos. The problem lies on the whole song itself. seems like everyone is focused on 4 to 4 bars and not being able to connect the whole song's body to work in harmony. Boring stabs and annoying leads and cheap pads(if even) that make a cool 30 seconds of mediocre "sound" its the only reason to build a song apparently. Almost %80 of songs getting produced don't even have proper drums for its build. Amateurs that can't tell the difference from electo kick and hats to house basselines are the one that killing every type of the music now. everyone i suffering because all of a sudden there is trance with dubsteps elements in there. And by dubsteps i mean the kick and hats and wooble basslins and glitchy leads. its chaos everywhere and who ever has a slightness love for the music is sick to the stomach.

also the reason why its electro and loud it's to keep the ADD massive herd of people focused. I mean how could you even dare to relax for a second when you have loud stabs screaming for your attention. commercial music has always thrived on this. its everywhere.

So you are correct to the fact that a sound gets more production detail, but they are trying to improve a shitty sound. you can take a piece of turd, try to decorate it and place some nice flowers around it , but it still shit at the end of the day.

Here is a sample. the only reason this is called trance because labeling it with the name "trance" will give this song more credit/listeners rather then call it house (which i mostly made of house elements) or pop music(which is mostly extinct now)

I've long since jumped onto the nu-disco and deep house boat (think Add2Basket, Jody Wisternoff, Danny Howells, Luke Fair) but have tuned into a few GDJB episodes and have been pleasantly surprised with the proggy vibes... not to mention Oakenfold of all people have been playing some throwback-sounding trance with psy influences. Even though DJs like Tiesto have abandoned the genre, and Armada/Anjuna* shovels out so many samey sounding records, I have more hope for the future of the genre than I did when I jumped ship during the "Anthem" time period.

*at least there's Anjunadeep, which has a great roster of artists on it.
